Current Lehigh Freshman, Answering Questions

i applied and was accepted to the pc rossin college of engineering but now i’m second guessing myself…could i possibly transfer into the college of arts and sciences? and if so how would i go about doing that

You will absolutely be able to transfer to Arts and Sciences… one of the things I remember is how much the tour guides would talk about the interdisciplinary focus of courses at Lehigh and the ease with which someone could change schools.

From what I remember, so long as you go to your advisor as soon as you possibly can, you’ll be fine. They can switch you in to A&S courses. If you wait, you’ll still be okay; talk to your advisor, tell them you want to be in A&S, and then pick your second semester courses based on an A&S curriculum.

copaman, you kind of already answered this but wasnt very clear –>

what are the admission standards for the IBE program in general? my daughter has a 1380, a 740 in math and a 640 in verbal. do you think this would be a good fit for the sat range of admitted applicants in this program, not considering the other factors of an appication?

I wasn’t very clear because I don’t really have any way to tell you what the “admission standards” are for IBE. Those are determined by the school and the two IBE advisors.

That being said, I do believe a 740 in math is higher than what I had.

IBE also likes girls who apply.

Thanks copaman and co. Truly great help!
However, I got some questions as well :stuck_out_tongue:
What does category I room represent? And how about the tennis at Lehigh? Anything significant about them?
Is the elec.eng. course a 4 or 5 year programme? Hence, when does the induction week (if any) start off?
Thanks (:

So now that I am a bit more certain I will be attending Lehigh, I have a couple of questions about student life:

How are the classes difficulty wise? As a major in biology is a 4.0 GPA unheard of, or is it an obtainable grade? I did not read anything about grade inflation nor deflation, so it everything fair in a sense?

As a minority, I honestly have read nothing positive about Lehigh if it were written by a minority. They commonly all seem to bash the student body in its racism. Would being a minority, in all honestly, affect how people perceive me? Is there an abundance of racism on campus or even ethnocentric views from the majority?

Lehigh is a big party school and all, but I do not plan on drinking. Does this school have a jockish feeling to it, as in if you do not play sports or part of the “social scene” you feel like a complete loser in a sense? Would it be wise to just attend a party, but not to drink?

I am not really scared of people making fun of me, since I am pretty fit, not really the stereotypical “South Asian” either, so opinions?

Damirbor:
I have no idea what a Category I room means.

I have a few friends who play tennis on the club team but I don’t know anyone on the varsity team. They seem to like it.

EE should be a 4 year course.

Induction happens during the week of Orientation, which is the first 5 or so days after you arrive on campus.

mbirabaharan:
4.0 is possible, but difficult. I know a kid who is getting a 4.0 in Bio and all I ever see him do is study.

There is no racism on campus. Seriously. Yes, the student body is mostly white kids, but I sure as hell haven’t seen nor heard of any racism occurring on campus. There’s a lot of negative talk out there about Lehigh being racist but it definitely feels unfounded.

There is no “jock” feel to the school… that’s way more prevalent in high school. Going out to parties etc. is a huge thing and it’s how I met the overwhelming majority of my friends. Not drinking at a party is fine, a lot of people respect that. So long as you’re having a good time, you’ll be fine. The social scene is very much focused on greek life and parties, so I’ve found that choosing not to go out means not doing much…

Thanks copaman for the reply, as for the GPA topic, what would you say the average GPA is? Do you think a 3.75 or higher is easily obtainable if I devout my time to studying or is some serious natural intelligence required?

As for the social scene, if police were to bust a party, would they ever cite you for the possession by proximity law? So even if you never drank you still get in trouble since you were in the same room with a bunch of underage?

If you put in some serious time studying, a 3.75 is doable.

Police busts are… interesting. I’ve been involved in two. I have never heard of anyone getting cited for possession by proximity, though.

I disagree about the racism stuff – When Obama was elected there were students at Lehigh who really reacted poorly and constantly threw racial slurs at the African American students and made their lives miserable. It got so bad that Alice Gast had to have a meeting with African American students to discuss how to deal with it (The students wanted Gast to do something and she wasn’t really sure what to do). Racism at Lehigh (at the moment at least) isn’t 100% evident but it’s definitely there.

As for police busts, sometimes they take pictures of people at the party saying they’re going to find the people in the Lehigh database afterwards but I’ve never heard them actually following through with this. Unless you stay at a party while it’s getting busted and outwardly show the cops that you’re drunk, I doubt that they would ever cite you for possession by proximity.

does anyone know how hard the calculus readiness test is?

anyone know how bad the consequences for turning in fafsa and css late are? fin aid said they would “consider it” but im still worried

I was accepted early decision as a business information systems major, but have since wanted to change to finance. Is that something I should take care of now, before selecting courses, or just change later on once I get to campus? I think I actually want to double up in finance and accounting, but I’ll definitely take care of the double major when I’m there on campus.

Regarding the fafsa thing – I turned in the CSS profile a few days late last year and still got a good amount of financial aid (and got accepted, of course) so I don’t think it’s too much of a problem.

thanks for the help but i deffinetly turned them in more than a couple of days late lol… :</p>

What’s the business school like? Especially concerning accounting as a major.

How challenging is engineering? I mean I’m a pretty strong student I just don’t want to be completely overwhelmed and have no chance to enjoy myself for the next 4 years.

My son is in engineering, he is a freshman. He has a 4.0. He says the workload is doable, but you do need to study for two midterms and a final in each class. He studies alone, and with a study group and also utilizes the free tutoring. He has plenty of time for hanging out and having fun. You do need to know when to buckle down and study and engineering is more challenging than some other majors. Work hard and be smart about your decisions and take advantage of all of the tutoring and study group options available at Lehigh.
