One of my favorite things about high school is a friday night football game with a packed student section. I realize that W&M is not necessarily known for sports, but are they attended? Is it out of the ordinary to go all out for a football game (facepaint, etc)?
And, I feel like this goes hand in hand: how's the school spirit?
Any feedback on either of these questions would be much appreciated, thanks! :)

My friend goes to the games quite often and says they average about 8k per game. There are some students painted up etc, and a fair number go to the games, but it certainly isn’t the same atmosphere as a football-centric college. The same goes for their hoops games. Not an ACC atmosphere but still respectable.

W&M football sold out 3 of its 5 home games last year in a down season (5-6). Probably about 2000 students generally show up for games, and sometimes as high as 3000. As a percentage of the student body, those numbers are very high. There are people with face and body paint, but they aren’t the majority (of course, I doubt they are the majority anywhere). Football team average around 11K (12259 capacity).

Basketball is rougher. There is a solid group of a few hundred students (my estimation) that shows up to all the home basketball games. If the team is good, then they draw very respectably also, but the bball team is coming off 2 very bad years. W&M basketball is one of only a few D1 teams that hasn’t made the NCAA tournament, so… you might get to witness school history, if you decided to attend (and uhh… if the team gets better, which it should). The basketball team drew about 2K/game this year.

IMO, the school spirit (not just sports related) is very high. W&M is really a community.

Thanks to both of you! I’m so happy to hear that sports attendance is at least decent haha. And soccerguy, I’m glad you mentioned that W&M is a community, that’s really important to me!

Volleyballer, I was there during a WM/ODU (maybe it was CNU? It was a huge rival.) game this fall – it was pretty packed and made it hard to drive on campus, but there were also plenty of people Swemming and NOT at the game.

I didn’t get into the game, and while it may not be UT Austin level, I’m guessing it doesn’t look like this, either: http://cubsfanreport.com/reports/2010_0722/bleachers_465x336_2010_0722.jpg

I’m sure it was ODU… CNU doesn’t play D1
