Wait but does anyone know when the penncard deadline actually is?

Convocation is just freshmen, no parents.

I have no idea when the Penn Card deadline is, but how hard is it to take a picture of yourself and upload it online?

thanks, got it!!

I want to bring storage devices to go under the bed in Kings Court but don’t know what the vertical clearance is from the floor to the underside of the bed. Also, does the school provide waste/recycling baskets for each room or do we bring our own?

No idea how much distance is between the bottom of the bed and the floor.

You bring your own trash can for your room. There should be trash cans in the hallways of KC if I remember correctly.

how much does a pennpass cost for the yr?

thanks!!

Cost of the PennPass:
[Penn Transit Services](Homepage | Penn Transportation and Parking)

Unless you plan on taking SEPTA every day though, it’ll be cheaper to just buy tokens whenever you need to travel (e.g. at Fresh Grocer, CVS, your college house, etc.)

thanks for the info…i was thinking it might have been easier to buy that to take the train to nyc but i’m probably not gonna buy it

The cheapest way to get to New York is probably to take the bus. Bolt Buses are really nice (leather seats, outlets for your laptop, and free wireless!) and it’s roughly $12 for a one-way ticket. The train tends to be a bit more (I think when I took NJ Transit it was something like $24 one way?)

thanks for the info. do u know if u have 2 transfer in trenton if u take the bus from nyc?

no boltbus goes from penn station in nyc to 30th street station in philly; you won’t need to transfer

how’s megabus?

so, if i took the train from nyc to trenton then took septa to philly, it would cost a lot, but could it wind up even cheaper than boltbus if i take the train from penn-station to trenton then take a bus from trenton to philly?? is that even an option?

(sry for all the transportation questions)

Kevin: Just curious whether you or any other posters have any insight about what kind of environment Penn is for gay guys. I am not overt or flamboyant, but don’t plan on hiding my orientation when I go to school. Any thoughts?

If you book early enough on Bolt or Mega it’s much cheaper. I wouldn’t take a bus through southern Jersey. SEPTA and NJ Transit (the last time I went to Penn from Newark) cost me less than $20 one way. I can’t imagine it being too much more expensive from NYC to Trenton.

I can’t personally speak to the experience of gay guys at Penn (not good friends with any) but they all seem to be relatively happy and most people here are pretty accepting. Check out the LGBT center for more information.

Answers to questions…

All beds at Penn give you roughly three-ish feet of underneath storage space. I recommend getting bed risers to give you some more room under there, but there’s a lot of space. Usually, however, your drawers are under your bed, so you’d have to do some rearranging if you want to put a refrigerator or something there.

Don’t get the Penn Pass.

Going to NYC is cheapest by Bolt or MegaBus, but if you hit traffic you could be in for a five hour ride, all told.
Train is $8.00 on SEPTA to Trenton (50 minutes) and $12.50 on NJTransit to NYC (around 90 minutes, give or take). You can get a roundtrip offpeak ticket to NYC for $21.50 (10.75 each way). The train is much nicer and roomier than the buses, so I recommend that. Also, SEPTA has trains that are meant to transfer right to the NYT trains. So you could make it to NYC and back for $37.50, which is really only around 14 bucks more expensive than the cheaper buses (and you don’t need an advance reservation!)

My roommate freshman year was gay, and it was no big deal. The gay community at Penn is very large and really doesn’t run into any major problems on campus.

Is there a drugstore close to campus? Close enough to walk to?

Are freshmen seminars just as demanding as other classes?

Does Penn have P.E. courses like fencing?

THanks!

Yes, there’s a CVS on campus.

There are CVS pharmacies at 34th and Walnut, 39th and Walnut and 43rd and Locust.

Yes, the seminars are as demanding as, if not more than, other classes.

Not to my knowledge.

I guess I will ask you, in case you or any of your friends know:

Does you know Penn’s definiton of First Generation College Student?

For example, if one of my parents dropped out of high school, and my other attended a year or so of college, with neither getting a degree, would one be considered a First Gen?

Thanks =)
