Current Penn Freshman Taking Questions

@Waylaer: This is a very interesting question, and one that it looks like other CC’ers have tried to answer. I’ve copied a quote from another thread, which you can read at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/568331-can-you-precisely-define-first-generation.html</a>. I hope this helps answer your question, although I wasn’t able to find any documentation on Penn’s website defining the term. A quick call to the admissions office, however, should clear up this matter. If you do find the definition, please share it with the rest of us. :)

*This pdf states that the US Dept of Ed defines first generation college students as “Neither parent had more than a high school education”

http://www.lavc.edu/research/News/FirstGenMar04.pdf</a></p>

However, I have searched the Dept of Ed website and could not find the definition stated there.

Here, the National Center for Education Statistics defines first gen students as “Undergraduates whose parents never enrolled in postsecondary education”.

http://nces.ed.gov/pubs98/98082.pdf</a></p>

So, it looks to me like a student is NOT considered first gen if either of their parents ever attended college. *

This might have been already asked but I couldn’t find it.

What is the best work study-job for a freshman (besides ITA?)?

Thanks!

Depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re looking to have a lot of down time to do homework, office administrative and library jobs are good. If you’re looking for experience related to your major, look for jobs in labs.

Thanks for responding about the gay issue. Did your roomate tell you he was gay or did you just know over time? How did that part of the process work? Thanks vey much.

Hey all,

I was told that today, August 10th, job listings for the academic year would be posted on the Student Employment Office (SEO) website.

However, as of now, not many openings have been posted. Is there a deadline that Penn’s student organization, departments, etc. have to meet with regard to submitting information about job openings to be posted on the SEO website? Will more job openings be posted over the course of the coming week?

I just want to make sure that I don’t miss an opportunity…

Philip

Job postings are posted throughout the course of the semester, so check regularly if you don’t see something you’re interested in.

My roommate told me he was gay on the Friday after NSO, while we were hanging out with the rest of our hall. It wasn’t a big deal for us at all… we actually didn’t realize that he was just then coming out of the closet, so we didn’t recognize that we should have congratulated him on it!

It certainly didn’t change our dynamic as roommates. We’re not the closest friends, but we have different groups of friends (he has his fraternity and I have the Glee Club) and we’ll have lunch and catch up every now and then.

Hey! So I’ve been hearing a couple of mixed emotions about NSO - or at least, the university sponsored activities of it. What are the best activities and what’s not? What events should freshmen be sure to go to or avoid?

Thanks!

eat dessert at commencement

Commencement is a bit far off for freshmen to think about :stuck_out_tongue: … but seriously the dessert reception at Convocation is phenomenal. I can’t wait to eat some myself!

From what I remember, here are the events worth going to (including the mandatory ones).

The Penn Reading Project discussion… granted, you have to go, but if you read at least a tiny bit of the book, it’s really interesting.
Penn LifeSketches
Toga party (pregame it, get dressed in togas and go to the party, but don’t be afraid to leave after 20 minutes since the actual party is pretty lame)
Mask & Wig Freshman Free show
Freshman Performing Arts Night (it’s not during NSO but you should definitely go!)
and anything that involves food fo’ free.

haha dang, you can tell which one is more recent in my mind

convocation! not commencement! (some dessert at commencement wouldn’t be that bad)

how do u get to get dessert as an upperclassmen? i want dessert all 4 years : )

Okay guys, what is this whole “dessert at commencement” thing about?

it’s not dessert at commencement, which was my mistake

it’s dessert at convocation

and there is a humongous dessert buffet in wynn commons after convocation is over - designed for freshmen, but upperclassmen routinely sneak in

which dessert is generally the best? aka what should I look out for?

how’s williams cafe in williams hall?

For a moderate to fast walker, how long is the walk from Clodia Cohen Hall to Claire Fagin Hall? Is it realistic to schedule back-to-back classes in these buildings?

What are labs like if you’ve taken them? any tips in succeeding in them?

in labs… you do the experiments?

so follow directions?

cohen to fagin is pretty fast

do people typically go home for the fall break- if they live fairly close to philly?
