Safe areas

I am a freshman coming from OOS. Which parts of Atlanta are considered safest? Which parts around GT should GT students mostly avoid?

Don’t wander around campus at night by yourself.

Don’t go off campus on foot at night unless you are with a large group of people. As simple as that.

I’ve never once felt in any danger on campus during the day or at night, but better safe than sorry. The GT police are required to notify students of any crimes that take place on and near the campus. The worst ones have all taken place off campus. The crimes that take place on campus are usually theft.

The most recent strings of crime on campus have involved strangers asking to borrow peoples cell phones. Once they have the victims cellphones in hand, they take off.

Thanks for the tips. What areas of the city of Atlanta should my parents avoid when they are visiting during the F.A.S.E.T orientation? Which are the good/safe neighborhoods/areas? This information will be greatly appreciated.

Uhhh, The gatech campus is pretty safe, but if you end up somewhere that looks pretty ghetto, you should probably turn back the way you came

It’s completely safe to wander campus at night by yourself.

As far as parts of the city that are safest: Midtown, Virginia Highlands, Buckhead, Vinings, Decatur.

Where to avoid near campus: south of campus (which is low income assisted housing) and north of campus (home park). Neither area is incredibly dangerous, but there are a number of thefts. The reason is that students on campus frequently have a laptop in their backpack and are legally not allowed to have a gun. So students are easy prey for criminals who watch them walk off campus.

There have been some pretty brazen crimes (I have heard of armed robberies on North Ave and 10th street right in rush hour traffic), but I have never personally had any problems on campus. Generally speaking, south of campus is bad, southwest is worse (though I spent a lot of time there and never had problems), everything else is hit or miss.

How do I get to the airport from the GT campus safely?

Ride the MARTA or I believe you can use the GT Stingrette service if you plan on living on-campus. As a last resort, there are Zipcars all around Atlanta and within the campus.

MARTA goes straight inside the airport. It’s roughly a 1 mile walk to the MARTA station from campus, or you can take the Tech Trolley directly to the station during their hours of operation (~7am-11pm).
