I'm an incoming transfer student majoring in Soc and I'm discovering that registering for classes this first quarter is not going to be as smooth as I had imagined. I have another month before I register for classes, but the classes I'd like to take are nearly full or closed - key word here is LIKE. Should I take a class even though I have no interest in it to simply fulfill a major requirement this quarter, or should I postpone fulfilling this requirement until the class I'd LIKE is offered again in Winter/Spring?

Personally, I'd probably deal with class I have no interest in, but that's just me. I tend to rush through my major requirements, so I try to get it done ASAP.

If the class you would like is a big class (>100), you could attend the first session and chances are you should be able to get the class. Well, this is just speaking from my experience in Econ/Management classes.

this is very typical and is why people hurry to take the earliest orientation dates. the thing is, registration is just one of those things that is a constant pita at UCLA. it's never particularly easy or smooth, which is why priority is so coveted.

understanding this, i don't know that i'd take the gamble and wait to take requirements until winter quarter, since you don't have a guarantee for winter quarter. my best advice is to try to knock out at least one requirement (two if you can stand it) and then take one or two classes that are more desirable. this way you're not suffering through three or four miserable requirements just for the sake of crossing things off the list, but you can also feel like you're making some progress towards your degree (which i think is important to the transition between schools. you work so hard at your first school that to stall for 3 months at ucla not taking any major requisites would be difficult and somewhat hard on the morale to keep pushing through).

If I could re-do my transfer transition, I wouldn't have taken so many major reqs in a row. In my first three semesters, I took 3-4 major req classes each semester. I wish I chopped it down to 2 or something. Less stress :(.

eh. i did that but i was in a serious hurry to get out of there. i don't think i took more than 3 or 4 classes total that didn't count towards something, and that included two summers. it was stressful, but i knew what i wanted and i knew it was hard to achieve so i just did it. it was definitely more stressful than most of what i did at UCLA though.

Well, almost every class I take or plan to take will count towards something, but I wish I did 2 econ 1 other subject UD class rather than a full 3 econ or 4 econ a semester.
