I heard that it is impossible to study in New/North. Sum1 basically said that if you DO live there, the only place u can study is in the library. Is that true? I want a place where it's social, but not SO social that I can't even work on stuff w/o having to leave.

Are housing options first-come first-serve?
That just doesn't seem to make much sense, or...it makes lots of sense, depends on how you look at it, as many students have not received a letter yet. So, the honors kids and people who got their letters early March get first pick? I know that at UCLA it's more of a lottery thing, than a first-come first-serve...help?

Thanks!

it is first-come-first-serve.

it states in the booklet "Living at USC" that the single most important facotr in determining where you will be assigned is the date they received the application.

Having lived in North this year as a biomedical engineering student, I found that it's not really hard to study here unless you like absolute silence. If it does get a little loud, the doors here are pretty good at keeping noise out, so to be honest, the street noise from Figueroa is worse than the noise coming from inside the hall, and the street noise is really something you can't avoid easily since pretty much all the dorms face the streets.

True, housing is first-come, first-served, but all incoming freshman are guaranteed housing.

Alright, here's the deal.

for all of you in Birnkrant next year, you'll just have to come over to my dorm at north next year to party! :)

North Represent!

Go 3rd Floor Captain's Hall!

lol i have a kinda stupid question- are bathrooms coed in New/North?

No, bathrooms are single sex...

ok... this question might sound dumb but can the meal plan be used at jamba juice? I love jamba juice and that would be so sweet!

Yes... the meal plan (dining dollars) can be used at Jamba...

Son has a question...where can he get a steak on campus? He's definitely not a vegetarian...

More questions: I see there is a lot of enthusiasm for Birnkrant. Why?

Can someone give more detailed pros and cons on the Deans' Halls in Marks and in Trojan?

Sarahjhansen ~ Why didn't you ask for a Dean's Hall room?

This is kind of interesting to me...the university has actually expanded a lot since I went there in the 1970's and I did not realize this until I saw the map on the link from Guidez89. University Village used to be "way over there, off campus" when I was a student.

Upstairs Cafe has some pretty good steak. They introduced a new item this semester that everyone I know who's had it considers good. They take dining dollars (Trojan meal plan) or discretionary only (only dining dollars applies to meal plan, discretionary is something else).

random question that's completely off the housing topic- would a GPA of an 88% (ish) keep you out of USC?

"themegastud,

Why do so many Trojans hang out in Westwood? "

Ha, because, as nice as Figueroa's Restaurant Row is (Fatburger, McD, Carl's Jr, Jack in the Box), you can only eat so many Western Bacon Cheeseburgers before craving some pizzookie.

Upstairs Cafe actually has this $30 wagyu kobe steak that's delish. Last year at the end of the semester, it became the most popular item at Upstairs when everyone who had Trojan plan (and invariably, plenty of dining dollars to rid themslves of) took out large groups of friends out for Kobe steak.

Regarding the Dean's Hall in Marks,

The standard sentiment is that it's too quiet -- something which I'm sure many New/Northers would consider to be a good quality, however complaints seem pretty common that in Marks, especially the Dean's floors, students seem to be too secluded and too busy studying.

reasonabledad: i received my notification of the dean's scholarship after i sent in my housing form... and, as themegastud said, marks hall sounds a bit quiet. personally, i chose birnkrant as my top choice because it seemed to be the happy medium... not too social (like new or north) and not too quiet (like marks hall). besides, the coffee shop on the bottom floor doesn't hurt either : ) hey- any news with your son and the whole scholarship deal?

The Kobe Wagyu steak is not on the menu this semester, and as good as it was, it was hit and miss because sometimes the chef would not cook it thoroughly. One time, two of my friends ordered it well done and when it came out it was rare. Steak Diane, which sort of replaced the Kobe Wagyu, on the other hand, is much better. Even cooked well done, it's tender and juicy.

I'm not a steak connoisseur, and I think it's funny how part of the thread is about steak.

Hey, Marks Hall isn't that bad! Most of the other dorms consider it to be very quite, but we are actually rather social. The main difference between Marks and the other halls is the partying. In general, people don't actually party inside of Marks Hall, but go other places to party. However, they do go out fairly often to do that. Also, the nice thing about Marks is that you really get to know everyone in the dorm, because it is quite small. I think it is the smallest dorm on campus. Doors are usually open, and people hang out together a lot. It really depend on whether you want the party in your room, or a short walk away. We aren't all social pariahs.
