Current Vandy Freshman

Momthreeboys–My daughter has come home the last 2 years for fall break and brings books with her (TSA always opens her very heavy luggage because they must think she has a bomb in there  ) Part of the reason she comes home is because we have not gone to Parents Weekend and we have planned ahead and found great deals on Southwest Airlines.

S2 is a senior now, and he has come home every year for fall break–as has his roommate. My husband and I have never attended Parents Weekend, choosing to see him at less busy times of the year. We are only three hours away, so no plane tickets are involved. He brings home notes and books every year, but I have yet to see him study. He brought home his girlfriend last fall break–and I was delighted to have another female in the house. She DID work on papers.

What are your weeks usually like?

HI
S2 is a current Vandy Freshman. We live in NJ and he came home Thanksgiving, Winter Break and Spring Break. Fall break is only a few days and he chose to stay on campus. Told us there were many kids around and was a good time for him to catch up on work as Midterms start the following week. Many of the boys rushing frats were invited to spend the break at Fraternity events/retreats. Do not worry, they will not be alone on campus.
The kids who are closer to home will do so for Fall break. Most of the NY/NJ/Chicago/California/Boston kids do not

Momthreeboys: My son found fall break a perfect time to catch up on studying, sleeping and socializing after a very busy start to his first semester. He said that while many students do head home, all of his out-of-state friends stayed on campus. My husband and I attended Parents’ Weekend and had so much fun that we are definitely going again this year.

Thank you everyone for the info regarding fall break.

Momthreeboys, the first year, my D thought that she would not want to come home over fall break, but then changed her mind at the last minute when all of her friends were going home. Luckily, we fly Southwest, so the tickets weren’t too expensive, even on short notice. We learned our lesson though for the next year and bought the tickets ahead of time. She came home again, as did most of her friends. If you live far away, though, and tickets are expensive, it would be fine for your S to stay on campus.

Momthreeboys - My son will be staying on campus. There is no easy set of flights between Nashville and where we live in California. He’d spend 2 of the 4 days traveling. That’s one of the reasons we are going for parent’s weekend. We have more time available to travel. If he wants to leave school, he can visit his grandparents in Atlanta.

Go9ersjrh- my first thought was not to buy a ticket home for him for Fall break but then I wondered if this break tended to clear out the school and didn’t want to leave him stranded there as this his first year away from home. The fares are already high for some reason for this time period so I know I couldn’t make a last minute purchase. After hearing the feedback from the very helpful, gracious veteran parents I have decided not to buy the ticket. It sounds like he will be fine there. We are also going for parents weekend so hopefully he will get his fill of us then.

Campus is pretty abandoned during Fall break but I had no issue with staying. You have to eat out for all your meals but otherwise it’s just nice long and mostly quiet weekend. Personally I wouldn’t particularly recommend going home unless the trip is pretty short/money is no issue/kid is homesick.

hey guys can some1 in vandy answer this? im international so like my close friends tend to have this opinion about vandy - “everybodys gonna be wearing cowboy hats and listening to tim mcgraw or something on saturday nights.” so erm is it like that lol?? coz like the only thing i know about country music is taylor swift (because of KANYE WEST). so am i gonna struggle to fit in (that is if i get accepted)??

Did anyone know when is parents weekend for class 2017 ?

Nobody is going to be wearing cowboy hats. You will not hear country music on campus any more often than pretty much any other campus.

whew

that was one of my key worries. ^_^

@Pancaked thanks a lot lolz. that was actually one of my key worries. no sarcasm. now i just have to get accepted.

There is a lot more to music in Nashville than country music! :)

The question is — just how much of that music is country, proportion-wise?

If it’s 80%, you see, then the fact that the other 20% exists doesn’t allay my worries much…

Nashville is the country music capital of the world. There are a lot of country music recording studios and artists here. But pretty much every band on tour ever also stops here. And the country music of Nashville barely penetrates the campus. Kids at Vandy have the same music interests as any other campus, though being located in Nashville probably does make us a little more open to/appreciative of country music. And there’s nothing bad about that.s

You have to remember that Vanderbilt brings students from all over the country/world, just like any other top school. It’s not like all these diverse students came to Nashville and suddenly adopt some southern/western stereotype just because there are people in the area that exhibit it.

drgreenhead–Family Weekend (as they officially call it) is Sept 27-29, 2013 Exact schedule of events is not yet available but you should be able to search “family weekend” on the vanderbilt.edu website in a couple of months and they should have a schedule posted.
JRswish–I visited my daughter for 3 days last week and don’t recall seeing a single cowboy hat on campus. She says they usually play dub step music at the fraternity parties (I’m so old I don’t even know what that is!) Also, I’m not up on celebrity gossip but think that Taylor Swift is now living in LA most of the time if that puts your mind at ease  Don’t know if she’s sold her condo across from campus though.
Philovitist–there was an interesting article in insidevandy.com last week about a group of freshmen guys at Vanderbilt who have an interest in business so they started a record label this past fall; they currently represent 3 musicians/groups (all Belmont U. students) none of whom are country, for what that’s worth. I can rattle off the names of several nationally known music groups that call Nashville home but they are not country musicians…The Black Keys, Kings of Leon, Jack White…not that any of them are dropping in to play at the local music venues, lol.

LHSCary - Had to have my son (Class of 2017) play me some dub step music off YouTube. I didn’t know what it was either. In my day, I’d have called it Techno.
