Current Vandy Freshman

so i googled nashville, tn (yeah i know i shda done this much earlier) and yeah da place looks pretty awesome. nothin lik i thought lol. dubstep is lik da awesomest music ever (after whatever kanye releases). taylors condo looks pretty cool doe.

Like any school, Vandy has students who listen to all sorts of music. Off campus, there are many venues around town, playing all types of music. My son is into metal, and one of the bands he likes was coming to town around the time we were there a couple years ago. Vandy has Commodore Quake in October and Rites of Spring in April. Go on the Vanderbilt website and search to see who has played those events in the past. My D was on the Music Group board, and they worked hard to get a variety of groups to play (although because Rites is the same weekend as Coachella, it was difficult to book).

Does anyone know if AP credit can be used to meet the liberal arts core in the School of Engineering? I know they cannot be used for the AXEL requirements in A&S.

Go9ersjrh, AP credit can be used for the liberal arts core in the School of Engineering. I am a current freshmen engineer and my adviser confirmed this in early fall.

That helps alot. My son may have most of his liberal arts core complete when he arrives if he does well on both AP Econ tests.

Did you enter Vanderbilt with AP Calculus credit? If you did, did you move on in the math sequence or start with 155A and repeat?

^I entered Vanderbilt with AP Calculus BC credit and moved on in my math sequence. I took Math 175 (multivariable calculus) in the fall and am taking Math 198 (differential equations) right now as a Chemical Engineer and will be done with my required math courses after this semester. I do not recommend repeating 155A and 155B as the department makes those courses harder to weed out the premeds.

Apoc314 - I appreciate the input especially about making them harder to week out the premeds. Sounds like my son should start with Math 175. On a side note - good choice on the ChemE major. Both my husband and I are ChemE’s. Son will be an ME. He doesn’t like Chemistry. I just don’t understand.

Take all the AP credit you are allowed to take! Lots of those intro classes are huge and, yes, pre-meds do cause a lot of competition and angst. Just proceed, it will be well worth it to your GPA.

POINTS TO REMEMBER ABOUT AXLE Liberal Arts

No AP credit can be counted towards the 13 courses required for AXLE.
AP credit does count towards other areas of a student’s course of study.
AP credit is also used, in some cases, for placement in individual levels of courses.
This is important because virtually every course is now open to first year students for AXLE fulfillment, regardless of level.

The School of Engineering uses the framework of the AXLE Liberal Arts requirement for its liberal arts requirement. However, a big difference is that Engineering allows AP credit to be used to meet their liberal arts requirement.

Engineering does not accept AP Physics B or AP Statistics for credit.

The “AXLE” program doesn’t apply to the school of Engineering. We have a simple liberal arts core, but that’s it.

DS and I just visited Vandy. The tour and info session was nice, campus was beautiful, food was great, dorms were nice. DS is interested in mechanical engineering, specifically automotive. What should he know about Vandy that we may not have gotten from the tour? If you are mech engineer major, what made you decide on Vandy?

Hey all, I just got accepted to the new incoming freshmen class of Vanderbilt and had a question.

As an Asian guy, how will life be at Vanderbilt? Not to sound artificial but I like asian girls, and with the apparently extremely large caucasian population there, will this be a problem?

Sorry if this is a weird question but I don’t want to go there and end up feeling like i don’t fit in.

The entering class of 2017 was 9.2% Asian students and a total of 29.7% minority students just to provide some figures.

What are the computer needs of a student in the School of A&S? Do students have a need for tablets as well as a laptop? Is a Mac compatable?

What are the computer needs of a student in the School of A&S? Do students have a need for tablets as well as a laptop? Is a Mac compatible?

Just need a laptop. Macs are totally fine, that’s what most students use. Only the engineers are recommended to get PCs.

Tablets are totally unnecessary. Some students like to take notes on an iPad or other device but I’d say that’s pretty rare. Professors usually don’t like to see students on a laptop/tablet anyway-- even it if it’s allowed, it’s a little disrespectful, and students should always be trying to build a good relationship with their profs!

Hi! I am an asian girl and am about to start my collage life at Vanderbilt this fall. I’m very interested in joining a sorority. Can anyone tell me more about them? Like what I need to join one, how many sororities are there, how do I konw which one I can fit in most? I assume it won’t be hard for international students to join the sorority, right?

I believe there are 10 sororities. There’s one for everyone, they each kinda attract different girls. You’ll need some nice sundresses for rush but that’s about it! Keep in mind each sorority has dues, they can range from 700-1400/semester (according to Vandy’s website).

Rush isn’t until the beginning of the second semester. Through the rush process, you’ll visit all the houses, rank your favorites, and go through a series of “rounds” where between your choices and the sororities’ choices you get narrowed down to fewer and fewer sororities. The process is intended to be mutual selection, meaning you ultimately end up at the best possible combination of how much you like sororities and how much they like you.

Pancaked, do you know how much fraternity dues are?
