"Currently Under Review"...Let's get to the bottom of this.

So. Myself, and seemingly a ton of people on here, have the infamous:

"Your application is complete and is currently under review. Admission decisions are sent on a rolling basis. All students who submit complete applications by the December 15 priority deadline will receive their decisions by the end of February. Students whose complete applications are submitted after the December 15 priority deadline will be considered on a space-available basis after that time."

OTHER people have had something like "We are very carefully reviewing you application blah blah blah." Most of the people I've talked to who've had that status NEVER had the "under review" status. Additionally, all or most of them were accepted.

Think about it. They've HAD to have rejected people by now, LOTS of people. What do those kids' statuses say? "Under Review?" I haven't heard of any rejections yet, so there's obviously some type of holding tank for rejectees and I'm STARTING TO THINK that the "under review" status is just that. If they operate the same way as Madison does, the status remains "under review" even after you're rejected, and then you get the letter.

Anyone know what this is?

Come to think of it, I think had the status “we are very carefully reviewing your application…” before the “your application is complete and currently under review.” It’s strange to think that they switched it…

Actually, I heard of some people who got accepted having the “under review” status a while ago and is still currently showing the message. In addition, some received the “very carefully reviewing” after the “under review” status, and got accepted shortly after. People got denied, but are just not revealing it. I believe that they are backed up, and may have a system that puts applicants in order, maybe from last name, a giving code (like the ID number), or some other technique, but some are at the bottom of the list while others are at the top. Just my speculation.

I think that they decided to change ALL pending application’s statuses to “your application is complete and currently under review” on February 3rd.

I think that they are finishing their final batch of applications, and admissions will continue to be released until the end of February.

This is just what makes most sense to me.

It doesn’t mean anything. Most people, including myself, got a decision letter from the U way before the online status changes.
You’ll know by the end of Feb fosure since you applied for the first deadline, so just relax :)

I don’t want to sound pretentious, but Minnesota’s way of handling the applications is a let down. As far as I can remember, (yes I have to say that, I applied in September), I believe I was told the process was rolling admissions. I just lost interest in the University because of this to be frank.

Edit: OP, I currently have the “Your application is complete […]”, before I had “We are very carefully reviewing you application […]” for a while.

^ agree 100%, while I’m sure they’re not hurting for good applicants, I’m sure they lose a lot of great prospects this way - you have to wonder if this is how they handle admissions, is this how it always is…

After reading Dman’s post, I have a final conclusion:

“Under Review” = Denied.

I’mOnABoat if that was directed at me negatively, think whatever you want, but no other University I applied to has handled admissions in this sort of manner. To each his own.

Edit: Also after rereading your OP, I’d just like to let you know I was deferred from UW-Madison and had the same status and evidently, doesn’t necessarily mean you’re rejected.

I have the same status, Imonaboat and I really don’t know if this means denial or not, but based on statistics of the last years freshmen class, I fall right above the line of last year. With this, perhaps rolling admissions simply means last name alphabetized or ID number, like someone else mentioned. I feel as though since they are still within the deadlines to inform you of a decision, you shouldn’t be freaking out yet! I know I am getting antsy as well, but this is just part of the college admissions experience. :] Try to remember and reassure yourself that rolling acceptance is just a system of organization, and not a way to place rejections after acceptances. I know that’s what I am telling myself!

I currently have this status, as its been a few days and would be ecstactic if this means good news but due to lack of rejection post we/ I have no ideal. In all I’m just glad that I will be hearing from the university very soon as we are now in Feb.

Dman, I wasn’t attacking you at all. I was just saying that since you HAVE had the “very carefully reviewing” status and now have “under review” instead of the acceptance like most people, there’s a good chance that means something. I don’t know your stats and I don’t doubt you at all, sorry if it came off like that =/

Here is a letter from the Director of Admissions

…

No worries. Good luck to all! I’m sure we can handle the next two weeks considering its been a five month wait already ha.

I applied on September 1st and have had the “Currently Under Review” on my tracker for a few weeks now.
I applied to 6 schools total and have heard back from all of them except for Minnesota.
I have since decided on MSU-but had a strong interest in Minnesota.
I understand rolling admissions and deadlines,etc-but I am not patient.
Good luck to all who are still “under review”!

It’s definitely competitive school, I myself hate waiting, but It’s all hopeful, the admissions are up this year and so it means they are getting near where the decision to accept the last remaining are ones who will either get it or not.

I already got accepted to of U of M-Duluth and that only took 2 weeks, so yea, keep on waiting.

I switched to “very carefully considered!!” Now I’m just scared.

haha lets be honest guys…were all rejected, i applied in july, haven’t heard back yet, came to terms with it about a month ago…

DS just switched to February 19, 2010: Your application is being very carefully considered.

At least this will be over - quite honestly either way DS has completely put UM out of his mind. Good luck to you guys who are holding out for UM as your first choice :)
