I'm going in March also.

Hi All,

Riordans and Buddy's Crab and Ribs (websites for both) are two great places to eat! You will see many mids doing so on Sats. We were there in March 2 years ago and the weather was beautiful. Aside from what I have posted prior the only advice I would give is to not place too much emphasis on the visit in terms of it all becoming clear. If you are faced with a tough college decision spending time on any campus will help but may not make the decision for you. It is only a 24 hour look into the life of a mid and it really depends on who you spend time with and what company you're in. My son came back with an honest view of what life would be like ( good and bad ) and how many restrictions there are. For those going in January and February you are going at a time called "the Dark Ages" and that's for a reason. I'm not trying to discourage anyone but it's easy to get caught up in the admissions challenege (as we are right now) and forget what real life is like there and it's not easy.

For those making tough decisions like Navgirl, (and all the rest with so many options before you) its time to think and ponder what life will be like in both places. In many cases it may provide more questions than answers. I am convinced that those that can honestly look at the process and life will fare better the first year. For those that have CVW opportunities at least you go in with your eyes wide open. Listen to the directions that day given by the Dean of Admissions and talk to those struggling as well as those thriving. You may learn more by doing so.

Enjoy Annapolis, it's a beautiful and historic city and you can't beat the crab cakes! Good Luck! JM

Sounds like everybody's going in March except me. :( I know I'll be there during the "Dark Ages", but at least I'll get a small taste of what it's like during what many say is one of the most depressing times of the year, and realize that's when it should be the worst. Of course, I'm not including plebe year. ;) This was the only real time I could get away from school. It's easier for me to get out of indoor track (only participate in 2 events) than track in the spring (NO WAY!).

Thanks for all the tips, JM! I think I'm going in with my eyes wide open. I know a couple of mids (one will be graduating this year) there now and they keep me informed whenever they can. BUT, I know for a fact there are some things they can't tell me and therefore, I'll have to figure them out for myself.

Is anyone else going next weekend? Anyone?????

my son is going. he is 100% sure that the Academy is the place for him, but we thought it was worth one last look.

doglover, he's going on the 21st?

that is the plan so at least there will be 2 of you there.

Armadillo's is a good place to eat too... my ex boyfriend took me there one time- he said that he and friends from his company go there a lot. The food was really good.

Navgirl--sorry you won't be there in March! I've got to call the Academy today to firm things up. I've been busy with baseball and school, so I'm not home much.

Does anyone know what kind of weather to expect in March?

Thanks,

Doug

doglover, that's great! Glad to hear I won't be the only drag next weekend. ;)

That's right, scitsailor! It's a huge hangout for the mids. My friend (should be interesting, since I'll be meeting him for the first time) from UNC and I plan on going there Thursday night. I think it's really packed with mids on the weekends. Too bad we can't go then. It would be nice to talk with the mids OFF the yard. Will definitely do some truckin' down "Ego Alley" Thursday and Saturday night. I can't wait!!!

ok i'm getting kind of nervous here.... what should I expect?

we seem to have lost our schedule.... can anyone help us out with timing etc? we know we need to be there by nine, but what do parents do and when, and what will my schedule look like?

If the schedule is anything like last year:
Parents and candidates assemble at a general information session, after which the plebes are paired with the candidates. Parents remain for a specific parent information session during which general questions are answered. After that they do whatever they want either on the yard or in town until they pick up candidates on Sat.
Candidates shadow their plebes and do whatever the plebe's schedule dictates, including going to class and taking quizzes.

thanks cmom!

scitsailor:
Please remember not to embarass your plebe "sponsor". Nice khakis and a polo shirt (or other collared shirt) rather than jeans are preferred. Don't forget your PE gear, just in case.

"Nice khakis and a polo shirt (or other collared shirt) rather than jeans are preferred."

Where do you guys come up with this stuff?

DeepThroat

so deepthroat what should we wear? does it matter?

DT

"Nice khakis and a polo shirt (or other collared shirt) rather than jeans are preferred."

If I'm not mistaken that comes from the instructions sent out to those who get accepted to the summer program (at least I believe that's what it said on my daughter's instructions last year.)

DT:
Hmmm, Candidatemom offered some helpful advice to a candidate and you're criticizing her advice, which as Shogun notes, comes from USNA Admissions in the first place...do you miss "flaming" mids and use this forum instead? Do all of us a favor, delete the bookmark for CC from your browser.

"khakis and a polo shirt" Thats what I wore and most of the other kids too.
