CVW questions

When I went in November I wore a sports coat, tie, and khakis, but I was more dressed up than just about all the other drags. It got kind of hot out just before afternoon meal so I left my coat up in my mid's room and ate lunch and went to the afternoon classes with just the tie and collared shirt. Then I changed into my PE gear when I went to go lift weights with a few of the mids and left that on for the rest of the night. That's what all the mids seem to wear on Friday nights, except for the 1st and 2nd class that wear civies. MGBGAJS I think they call it.

Long story short, i'm not in Annapolis anymore and missed the CVW. Thanks for all the advice on this tho.

wstcoastmom--Thanks! I will e-mail the tennis coach and see if I can meet with him. I'll bring my equipment as well.

gopherkitty--I'll be there on the 4th of March as well! My Mom and I are flying in on the 1st--she loves DC, and I have a feeling I'll be going to a few museums.

I've received an appointment to West Point--but my heart is set on Annapolis. The frustrating thing is, my entire transcript won't be ready until the 14th of February. I took an online class, and apparently it takes time to merge all the grades. I hope that my new SAT score of 1410 and my rising grades will help me earn an appointment. To make matters a bit worse, I now have a new RD who dosen't really know me.

Doug

Your record speaks for itself. Revisit the profile for the class of 2008. You sound very competitive. We love Washington DC too. Check out the the new air museum by the airport. Beat Army!

wstcoastmom--Thanks for the kind words. Flight arrangements are made, hotel reservations are made, and all I need to do is get the transcripts sent off to the Naval Academy as soon as I can get my hands on them! Very frustrating! It would be cool if by my March visit I'd have an answer. I would tell West Point "thanks, but no thanks" in a heartbeat. I know other candidates are on the Waitlist for West Point, and if Navy calls, I'm there, and the other candidates can have a chance.

My Mom will see to it that I get the full tour of DC--we did that once when I was 12. I also want to stop by my MOC's offices and tell them "Thank You" in person.

Doug

Glad to hear you all love DC! That's my neck of the woods! :D

Do check out the air museum, Doug. It's very impressive. And don't worry about the new RD. wscoastmom is right, your record speaks for itself. Have fun and let us know what you think!

What happened Scit???

Went this past weekend...great experience though very short! Was paired with a mid from my state. We went to the powerlifting practice. Coach was impressed that I lifted 405 pounds in the deadlift! Took in a couple classes and did a self-tour(run/walk) on the perimeter of the school. There were about 80 candidates. Not too many women...interesting. Definitely will go if the fat envelope arrives.

I would have been one more woman last weekend had my family situation not arose.

what were the most eye opening things about cvw? did most people enjoy it who went?

Most eye-opening? Truthfully the place seemed more laid-back than I expected. It may just be the way the company I stayed with is, but the upperclass were pretty chill. I didn't see any yelling while I was there (maybe that's mostly during PS and comearounds) and the plebes only had to do 2-3 chow calls every week. The mid I was with even said that the academics weren't that challenging, to him at least. That Friday night we even played Halo 2 with the upperclass, first in a second-class's room, and then in the wardroom...hahaha.

And yes I definately enjoyed it. It was great seeing the Naval Academy from the inside, how things are done day-to-day. It was nice getting to talk with the mids and better understand the pros and cons of the Naval Academy. I was alread fairly certain that I wanted to go to USNA before CVW, but afterwards I was definately sure it was what I wanted to do. I'd definately recommend going for any candidates that are invited (nominees at this point).

cool doug1 i'll look out for you! I am really excited because we'll get a first hand look at everything which will be great!!

Hey, I was invited to a CVW awhile back and I chose to go to the March one. My dad and I are driving down on Thursday night and staying in a hotel and then we report on Friday. Correct? then what? Are my father and I split up and he goes on tours and I go with a midshipman? What kind of stuff will I be participating in? and do I stay in Bancroft hall Friday night or at the hotel? It was unclear to me in the letter. Please let me know on what will be going on such as PT or so as well as sleeping arrangements for those of you who've already attended. I was given an appointment early Jan. and I'm lucky to be chosen for the CVW to get a real insider look of what I'll be up to in like 4 months and 1 wk.

You report in Mahan Auditorium (first deck of Mahan Hall) on Friday morning. A few Academy officals speak, you watch "To Lead and To Serve" for the 50th time, and then you leave with your mid and the parents stay in Mahan Auditorium and then go on a tour. They basically send you out into the hallway and there are a bunch of mids there and you go with one of them. I'm sure Capt. Antonelli will remind you, but be sure to get the form filled out saying who you're with and where his/her room is. If you forget Capt. Antonelli has to hunt you down and find you and you don't want that.

From there you'll go to class with your mid. I got to go to Naval History, which I thought was pretty interesting, and then we had some free time before noon meal formation and we went up to his room. Before noon meal I got to hear some of the plebes doing chow calls, and then I watched the company get into formation and march into King Hall. It was all upperclass at our table, the other plebes in my mid's squad only come to mandatory meals apparently. The food was actually pretty good I thought. After that we went to more classes, chemistry and calculus. Then later the mid I was with had to go to the library to do some research so he left me with his roomates and we went over to MacDonough to lift weights. When we got back like four of us chipped in for a pizza that my mid went down to Steerage to get. After that we played Halo 2 with upperclass and watched Full Metal Jacket. You'll be staying in Bancroft Hall in your mid's room. They'll give you a cot and nothing else. I didn't sleep much cause it was really cold but there was no way I was gonna complain.

On Saturday the plebes have to wake up pretty early for SMT (Saturday Morning Training). This will vary based on company. Some companies just do drill or PT. The one I was with heard a lecture on leadership by a Marine infantry major who is assigned to the Yard and was then going to work on riot control tactics but I had to go and missed this unfortunately. We ate morning meal in King Hall, got my stuff together, called my parents and met them at Dahlgren.

It was a great experience and I definately recommend going to anyone invited. A couple youngsters actually thought I was a mid. We were in their room getting ready to play Halo and one of them looked at me and asked me what company I was in. I really should have played along. Uh, 12th Company, Sir! Haha...

Not to scare anyone (well, maybe just a little) but remember that the worst of it is over for the plebes by this point . . . so don't think that plebe year is all "Halo 2" and "wardrooms!"

DeepThroat

I went back in November, but you definately have a point. The plebes I was with were busy, but it looked so much easier than I had imagined. That Friday night was actually service selection night for the firsties, and everyone seemed to be screwing around. Hell there were even some drunk firsties bowling in the passageways. And obviously plebes, playing Halo, in the wardroom, with upperclassmen, violates a number of rules.

I do wish I had seen the more strict, challenging side of the Naval Academy during my visit, since I'm still fairly certain it exists and I'll have to work through it for the next four years.

I'm going in March too. See you there.
