D.E.A.N scholars

So i recieved a letter via UPS today about the D.E.A.N's scholars and also an invitation to visit campus from the 25th through the 27th. I know this might be a stupid question but if anyone else got this letter do you know if it means that we've been admitted or just that we're being considered for the scholarship?

Hey,

I recieved that letter, too, and was confused as well. I just wrote an email to the guy who emailed us asking him to clarify what was going on. I'll let you know when I hear back.

Btw, I'm so glad to hear I wasn't the only one who had no idea hat to make of it!

it basically means you're in! congratulations!!

In what, exactly? The program or the school?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=154477&highlight=dean%27s+scholars

this thread sort of talks about what a dean's scholar is.. but if it doesn't provide you with any information.. just search the entire forum.

I also got this letter in the mail today (or actually, yesterday). I also didn't understand what it meant, and I called the person (assistant director of admissions) listed on the letter, and he told me I was accepted, but didn't get an "official" letter because they didn't have time to send them out or something like that. I guess everyone that got the letter was accepted, so congrats!

Thanks, I'm glad to hear that - congrats to you, as well!

Now, do you have any idea what exactly is going on with the scholarship program? Are we candidates or finalists or what? The wordig of the letter confused me, because first they said "congratulations! we would like to invite you to join one of NYU's most prestigious scholarship programs..." but then later it mentioned the visit as the final step in selection. Any ideas?

I actually have no idea if we got the scholarship yet or not...I think we'll have to show up because they want to see how we act, etc? I don't really know, I forgot to ask the person I talked to. I'm just planning on showing up, acting my best, and seeing what happens!

If I haven't received an email yet, does that mean I'm not getting it? Or do they send these emails out sporadically?

I got an rather cryptic email yesterday telling me that I would get a letter about a "special visitation opportunity." Did you get emails before you got the letters, or could mine be about something else?

To barberconcerto: I believe you not receiving the email means you are not getting that particular scholarship, though it is possible it could have been directed to your "bulk" or similar folder by mistake. Also, I have no idea about how they tell people about other scholarships, so you may still have a chance to be getting another scholarship, just not the D.E.A.N.

To undecided07: The emails were sent out yesterday for the D.E.A.N., though it may be a day or two before you get the envelope if you live farther away from the New York area. It was sent via UPS, and I live on Long Island, so it may have been a little quicker to reach me. However, I suggest you contact the person listed in the email in order to find out the specifics about what the email means to you in particular, and whether you are eligible for the D.E.A.N. or not.

Hope these answers help!! :)

Yes, thanks a lot!

I am still waiting to hear back from the guy who emailed us, I'll call him if he doesn't reply on Monday. I'll let you know whenever I talk to him what exactly is going on in terms of the scholarship.

I'm excited to be in generally, but I have to say, having that scholarship would move NYU way up on my list!

Is DEAN the most prestigious scholarship at NYU?

anyone get one in California?? I want one ): hahah

kind of sucks that you HAVE to visit, though.. what if you don't have spring break at that time or something, or you can't afford it? hahah

congrats to all! stats, anyone? (:

to Jackie1015: Thanks! Looking forward to see what he says...

To barberconcerto: Yes, the person I spoke to said that it is the largest monetary merit scholarship NYU gives out.

To theantithesisof: NYU actually covers your entire trip if you get invited, including transportation costs, meals, rooming, etc...so it's a pretty sweet deal! It would be even more fun if I lived on the West Coast - imagine getting an all-expense paid trip to New York for three days! Awesome!!!

I am so insanely jealous right now, hahah.. I really wanted to go to NY for my spring break actually too.

I'm from NY too and I feel the same wayas pianoguy11 - an all-expense paid trip to the city sounds great regardless!

What exactly is this D.E.A.N. scholarship? I'm a senior in CAS now, and I've never heard of it. I always assumed the Presidential Honors Scholarship to be the most prestigious (and the most merit aid) scholarship available. Is NYU offering something new now?

D.E.A.N. actually stands for Diversity in Experience and Academics at New York University, and apparently everyone that becomes a D.E.A.N. scholar also becomes a Presidential Scholar as well. I guess it's some kind of extra add-on kind of program to the standard Presidential Scholarship that NYU offers.

about the diveristy thing...do only minorities get the D.E.A.N scholarship?
can i argue that many whites are just as needy as minorities and make just as big of an effort to rise from poverty and poor schooling?
