D- In an Ap Class

Hello. I am currently a Junior in HIgh school and just finished one semester. I am currently taking these classes and my grades are:
AP English, A
Chemistry, B
Art I, A
French 3, B
AP Calculus, D-
U.S. History. A

My Sophomore year i took:
English 2 - A/A
Algebra 2- B/C
Biology- A/A
PE- A/A
French 2 - B/B
World history -B/A

Freshman year i know isnt counted much but I didnt do quite as well and my GPA including it is a 3.2, but without it, it's around 3.4-3.5. I havent taken the SATs yet but Im completely worried about getting a D in calculus. It is a mighty difficult class. I really want to get into a UC. I took Math Analysis as at a university during the summer and got Cs in both semester. I don't know why, but I decided to take Calculus anyways instead of taking math analysis. Now am I worried about my chances of getting into a UC. I was wondering if I still could I i pulled my grades up in Calculus and retook the semester at a junior college over the summer. I'm not really big on sports but im involved in community service and am the vice president of our school's french club. I was also in a leadership program in sophomore year. How will universities view me? Can i still make it? At least at a prestigious school? thanks for your time.

If by prestigous you mean Ivys, then im afraid they may be a very far reach for you. Unless you are instate for UCs, then that will be a reach as well.

But, it's possible right? Has it ever happened before? I mean can I still redeem myself? What kind of schools can i still get into?

Can you explain to me why you skipped to AP Calculus after you received a B and a C in Algebra 2? It doesn't make any sense.

I don't know why. They gave me AP calculus at the beginning of the year so I didn't bother changing it.

Well, that's unheard of. No Trig or Pre-Calc. Maybe if you got an A+, but that's still a stretch. It's VERY unlikely for the Ivies, even if you somewhat redeem yourself. But that doesn't mean you can't get into maybe a couple of other top tier schools if you really try.

I did take trig at a university. But I got Cs. I don't know. No one ever told me anything about going into Calculus.

So what kind of schools are you thinking about?

Then why did you sign up for it?? Ask if you're not sure, don't just sign up. Also--why take so many university math classes if you are not good at math. I don't know, but looks like you'll be reaching. Sorry.

I don't see the big deal in getting 1 D

I'd say that you should make sure you get all A's this semester, and you'll have a chance at some of the lower end UC's. And drop out of AP calculus. There's no way you were meant to take that class--it will kill you again if you don't switch to another math class.

I would also suggest dropping if possible - calc is not going to get any easier this term.

mfj130:

Assuming you are a California resident,
UCB/UCLA: Reach
UCSD: Slight Reach
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Match
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Safe Match

If you had a 3.6 and just one D, you shouldve been fine.

from what i hear uc admissions are really random, so don't hesitate applying

you as well as anyone else has a chance
do well on the sats and try to explain your d in the personal statement

Don't worry so much...But you need to get out of calculus asap. Work hard and don't slack at all--make those straight a's for 2nd semester. Your D could make a great college admissions essay too...How many essays does UC Berkeley get titled "D for Determined" Maybe you can turn the experience into a positive one...and if you explain to a college in an essay or otherwise why you did poorly and what you learned from it, you might be surprised :)

LOL D for Determined.

Why can't you retake Calc? They'll replace your D with an A(if you get an A).

"Has it happened before?"

Why don't you make it happen? Are precedents that important?

The truthful answer is...yes. This one Asian guy was accepted to UC Berkeley with an F on his transcript. He is extremely extremely bright. His school just didn't get along with him. He explained it in a powerful essay that made everyone cry. He started getting interviews from reporters and started to appear on TV.

I always believe in miracles. Retake Calc in the summer and get an A.

BTW, it's not necessary to do well in calc with pre-calc knowledge.
