So my counselor is on maternity leave and won't be back until late October or November, which means no letter of recommendation for me T_T I knew her well for 3 years, talked to her often, and she knew that I always wanted to challenge myself, sign up for the most difficult courses, etc.

Anyways, I have to get a LoR from a counselor I have yet to meet. How important is the LoR from the counselor? I'm not talking about the forms s/he has to fill out (because that should be the same either way), but what s/he says about you in the letter. I'm really worried that the new, generic LoR will hurt my chances of getting in UMich.

I’m worried about the same thing - one of my favourite teachers who thinks the world of me is pregnant and going on maternity leave in 2 weeks, and I really REALLY wanted a recommendation from her.

^ Why don’t you get the recommendation right now? -- Or is it already too late? I’m so grateful my teacher will be writing a recommendation for me. He teaches the same subject I’m majoring in, so it should help. Still, my counselor rec is gonna SUCK TT I just found this out like 30 mins ago and I’m freaking. Lol.

I’m pretty sure it’s too late, she hardly shows up for class anymore and when she does I’m not there because I’m doing some EC or something. :(

But hey, if it helps, our counselor doesn’t know us either - everyone applying abroad has one mass meeting with her and then she writes our recs based on a resume we hand in to her. As generic as it can get.

What they said when I went to an information session is that it’s no big deal if your counselor doesn’t write a picture perfect letter. They know that sometimes counselors have to deal with hundreds of students.
