DAAD Rise 2013

lolajan - I’m sure a lot of that comes down to the PhD candidates doing the selections, which is why a disproportionate number of the US DAAD scholars come from schools like MIT, Berkeley, Caltech, UPenn, and Cornell. They’ve actually posted the statistics for the past few years here: https://www.daad.de/rise/en/18824/

Those coming from the UK come from schools like Oxford and Cambridge. It’s not that more students from those schools are applying, it’s that they are well known even to German scholars. So in a way, it’s weighted in the sense that you’re more likely to be pushed forward by a PhD candidate who is familiar with your particular school.

Hi all,
My son (Junior, Yale, ~3.9) was accepted to the Physics program at Erlangen. His mentor contacted him and told him that as soon as his acceptance was official, they would arrange housing for him. That was a big concern, since one of last year’s student told him she had a tough time with her housing in Munich.

He’s also applying for the language course starting 5/12. Any idea on what that selection is based on?

Did anyone get a confirmation email after you accepted the scholarship? I did not get one.

Negative on the confirmation email. I’m sure it’s not a big deal, they sent out a ton of them and probably can’t reply back on every single one. It’s an organizational email, so an auto reply likely wouldn’t be in their best interest.

scoutsmom - Sorry, I don’t have any information on the selection process for those. Congratulations to your son on the opportunity though, it sounds fantastic! All the times I’ve been to Germany, I still have yet to see Munich. I am trying to get into the 26 May course in Berlin due to scheduling conflicts.

Hi all! I just got an email today saying I had been awarded the scholarship. I must have been part of the second wave of acceptances, so don’t give up hope yet!

RISE
GPA: 4.00
Year: Sophomore
Interview: Skype interview with PhD student
My Field: Biochemistry, Genetics
Selected Field(s) on Applications: Biology, Bioengineering

I am so excited; I really expected to be rejected! I will be in Lubeck, and plan to apply for the May 12 language course.

Hi all! Does it mean that they’ve announced all the scholarships? I’ve been waiting so anxiously

@cajunheron I’ll be in Lubeck too! :D

@ColumEng That’s awesome! Are you based at the University of Lubeck as well?

I’ll be at Fachhochschule Lübeck.

To anyone wondering if you hear back from them upon acceptance of the scholarship: yes, i just got a confirmation email from them saying they received my email.

Hey guys do you know how the selection process works? I have contacted them today, and was told that I was selected as #1 by the PhD students, but unfortunately I don’t get a scholarship. They said the pool this year is very competitive, and I don’t have a high enough GPA. My GPA is 3.88/4.00 (UC Berkeley). I don’t have a stellar GPA but I do see people with lower GPA who also get in. I’m a bit confuse…

I am sorry to hear that. Why don’t you ask them directly that if you’re #1 and have GPA even higher than some others? I am still waiting though. High chance is an email with the word “unfortunately” in it.

Is there anyone still waiting for the result? I haven’t got anything back yet. Does it mean that I don’t have any chance to get a scholarship. :frowning:

Winney, I am waiting too.

alexbui, good luck to both of us

I also haven’t heard anything. There is a reddit thread about this year’s application process as well, and from that I’ve been able to gather that as of last night, they are still sending acceptances. Of course, at this stage, I’m almost sure I’m not getting one.

Btw, anyone else apply to any particle/nuclear physics internships? Any word from those? I applied to one at MAMI, one at DESY, and one at Goettingen connected to ATLAS at CERN.

I’m pretty sure that I’m not getting an internship (My GPA is really low compared to what most of you have posted here), but it’s so frustrating that I have to wait this long for an official confirmation :S

Still nothing.

Still waiting to hear about the language courses - anyone hear about those?

I got confirmation today that i got into the berlin language course starting the 12th
