Daily life/ free time

I’ve learned a great deal of good info from CC about what to bring, how to prepare, and what a lot of the training and academics is like, but I’m still a little curious about the little free time that you do have. As a freshman, I’ve heard all the stuff you CAN NOT do, but what is it that you can do? Are you allowed to hang out with the other freshman in your squad? in other squads?listen to music? play music? Any insight into daily life would be great.

i can answer the music question.. 4digs cant have music til after recognition (which is next weekend for 2011).. although i've heard that sometimes upperclassmen play music really loud for the freshmen.

You cannot enter other squads before recognition, so you can only hang out in the 4 dig rooms in your squad.

In my free time these days I ski, swing and blues dance, EMT duties, movies, mall, eat, sleep, eat, sleep some more. ;)

Clarification: you can't have recorded music. If you play an instrument, that's fine.

You can't have music until after Recognition. However you can play musical instruments (for instance, I have a keyboard that I play when I have time). My roomate last semester had an electric guitar and an amp that he used as quietly as possible whenever he got the urge to play.

As for what you can do, it all depends on you, I guess. Some people are perfectly fine with just hanging around and talking for an hour, while others would rather be reading a book (that's usually me) or be surfing the web.

It depends on how you take life here too. If you're just gloomy and pout about how you want to do such-and-such, then yeah, you're not going to enjoy your life much. But if you take your situation and make the most of it, life's usually not too bad.

Oh, and if you think you enjoy your weekends now, just wait till you start your first school semester here. Weekends are what keeps you going sometimes

What can you do outdoors during the warmer parts of the year when you cant ski?

One of my favorite things in the fall was beach volleyball down in the quads. You can get some pretty good upperclassmen vs. 4 dig games going. :)

If you really feel the need for music during the 4* year you can join KAFA the cadet radio station. Potter is a DJ there and they gave her a letter allowing her to have music before recognition....like most things just don't abuse it.

So, is it possible to listen to music with headphones on your computer? Or is it just a blanket ban on all recorded music.

Blanket ban.

...that has been broken more times than I can count...

During the warmer times of year I like to just go down to the quads and play soccer, read a book, throw a ball around, etc. It's a good time.

clarifications:

4 digs cannot watch movies (unless given permission). you can visit with friends from other squads IF you meet in a common place (bowling, a-hall, oasis, off-base)
