Regarding Video Games

Now I know this is kind of a ridiculous topic but its just about the one thing I haven’t been able to find any information on. What are the academy’s policy on video games? Playing video games is a big hobby of mine and I’m almost positive I’m not alone on this lol. I’m assuming that they are a privilege that I have to earn but is it strictly squadron based?

To clear things up, this is not a HUGE issue for me lol, I’m just wondering if they’re something I should get used to not having.

You will not be allowed to play video games for your first 9 months here.

I didn't think they would let you have them at all. That's kinda cool. I have a 360 and like to play it when I'm bored. I don't suppose you have much time for video games, though?

I play with a kid on xbox live that goes to the Coast Guard Academy. I was shocked. I had already accepted that if I got an appointment to USAFA I would not play four atleast 3 years. I would imagine that time is too short to play though.

you are not allowed to have any electronic games, systems or computer games, as a freshman. now obviously solitaire and free cell are on the computer, but thats it. it makes it that much greater to get games after Recognition

and that way you can't be like me and waste 6 hours yesterday playing Battlefield... haha

It just depends on who you are, how much you have to do, and what you want to do with your free time. As a video-gamer myself off and on, I would recommend trying to stay away if at all possible. However, if you can't resist the occasional game, just make sure that you ALWAYS take opportunities to go out with buddies to hike, camp, climb, see a movie, go eat, etc. before playing games. Play them when you literally have nothing to do. You won't regret setting friends here as a priority.

As an alternative to gaming, reading is quite nice...and I have lots of books you can borrow...

Don't forget - it's not the Beast you have to make it through, it's academics.

Online gaming is not allowed (unfortunately). After Recognition, you can have video games. I have a 360 now, but it was largely a waste. I don't really play it that much...except this week, since I have no classes/training.

oh, and its great for recognition. my friend and i played took breaks from training to play a quick race on mario kart on my game cube :p

haha, yeah, it was very hard for me to go without videogames for 9 months (except during Leave). I was a big videogamer before I came to the Academy. After Recognition though, pretty much the only game I ever played was some Guitar Hero with friends...it's largely just a waste of your time. Since I have a ton of free time now with school over, I've beaten quite a few games lately...but in the process nearly drove myself mad from always being alone. Like G4C said, avoid playing videogames here unless you have no other option. Hanging out with friends is FAR better.

And yes, even videogames for freshmen can be based on the squad. I had a bunch of friends in 39 who had brought their videogames up here after Thanksgiving. Most squads will say no though...that doesn't stop some people though.

Thats so cool that at the Academy you always have someone to chill with.

haha, not always. That's something I struggle a lot with. I'm sort of a loner, but I really enjoy other people's company. Everyone always seems to be gone when I'm looking for someone to hang out with. That's why it's important to find a group of people you can hang out with here. For most people, that's their squad. I'm not a big fan of my squad (there's a LOT of cliques), so I don't hang out with any of my squadmates much except my former roommate. I mainly hang out with people from the SPIRE group (like a church group) that I go to.

I am the same way, I am a loner. Not necessarily because I want to but because I have to , to survive. I belive at the Academy you can't be that way to survive.

i dont think i've seen anyone with any type of flight sim on their computers. any reason why? ha

i like gaming, but i think there's a LOT more to do out there.. i guess after recognition i'll bring a few comp games for the heck of it, but i really see myself outside doing stuff. but for the down days, nothin beats FSX or CoD 4 :)

My roommate has a flight sim game for 360, complete with the throttle and joystick. It's fun and all, but most games like that are single player. I think a lot of people use videogames to hang out with other people.

a geeky question now: are all multiplayer things banned? could you start up a LAN game with roomate or a friend?

Oh my, the nations best and brightest!!! ;)

LAN games work just fine. I've done them here.

I've heard that it's hard to get, but I know some people have Xbox live

I wouldn't risk that. You might have to break the regs on getting around the firewall to do it, and if you get caught, I'm not sure what would happen.
