I understand there is a general media ban for unrecognized fourth class cadets, but I’ve also heard that upperclass cadets will sometimes play music very loudly for us. Can anyone confirm this?

How remote is the chance of being able to see a few events of the Olympics?

What can unrecognized cadets do over the weekend?

During BCT, you won't hear much. During the Ac year, there's always music playing in Mitch's, in the quads, sometimes in the hallways, etc.

That's a good question. You'll have an application on your laptop that will allow you to watch live TV via the Internet. Of course, you're only supposed to use it for school as a four degree. I'd have no problem with you guys using it to watch the Olympics though - come on, gotta support the good ol' USA, right? It certainly won't be up to me though. Can't hurt to ask your leadership for permission.

After PW, you can sign out and go get some dinner, catch a movie, or really do anything that the Springs has to offer (recognizing that you'll be in service dress). Skiing/snowboarding is also extremely popular in the winter, which in CO is roughly October to April.

concerning the olympics, you may be granted permission if you perform well as a squad. the BCS bowl in jan 07 was the day we came back (FL vs OSU), and our upper classmen let us watch, so its possible. don't expect it, but don't be too scared to ask

From last years experiences I would say it mainly depends on each individual squad. Some are more lenient then others. Some base things upon the performance of the 4degrees, where for other squads it will allways be harder or impossible to get privledges. You can allways try to get a reward program with your Training Officer, where if your classmates(within the squad) perform well on K-test and 4-dig life in general you gain priveldges and if you do poorley vice-versa.

Skiing and Snowboarding has another advantage for unrecognized 4-digs...you can wear civvies while you're skiing and snowboarding, and keep your civvies in your room but not get in trouble. That comes in handy for the night recognition ends.

What privilages you get and when is entirely dependent on your squad staff, mainly on the squadron commander and training officer. Fall semester, my squad's training officer gave us almost nothing, but whenver he did, the squadron commander always agreed. It was the other way around Spring semester.

Are there any hiking opportunities for 4-digs outside Academy grounds? I'd really like to hike as there are some great places pretty near to the Springs area.

Upperclassmen will definitely play their music loud so that you can hear. Usually there is a radio in each bathroom, too, so you can listen to music when you're in the shower. And as long as you are not obvious about listening to music, most people won't care. I'm not saying you should disobey the rules as long as you're not caught... I'm just telling you what it's like realistically. The night before the first day of school, our squad comm met with all of us four degrees and told us that he watched a movie almost every night of his 4 degree year. You can get away with it if you are careful, and most people do. Take that for what it's worth. It's up to you to decide what you do. Obviously you have access to media through your computer, so it's kind of an on-your-honor thing. Some upperclassmen will lend you movies and video games... it happens.

On another note, you might get to listen to music during basic. During first beast, my flight commander had all of us basics line up along the hallways outside his room while he played "Umbrella" by Rihanna with his speakers on full blast. Then we got on our faces and had to sing the whole song without messing up before we could get up again. We got to recover while we listened to the next song, then had to get back on our faces and sing Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls... it was actually a lot of fun. :) See, basic isn't all bad. Depends on your squad, but everyone ends up with good stories from basic.

^^^^ Piggybacking on that- Our flight was dancing in the hallway once with squad staff and a member of permanent party watching us. They got us with their cell phones.
That does make me feel better about going back, though. That just means more stuff to tell next year's incoming class, if I don't get knocked back again.

CraZnes- The ski club goes to resorts every weekend as long as there are enough people that can go that weekend (last year I rarely saw less than 2 buses full of people, they usually go if at least 20 are willing). Ski club is about 65 dollars for the entire year, but you can go just about every weekend that your squad lets you out. They provide two weekends a month of free passes for it (you'll learn more during club day 4 dig year).

The liberty pass for military personnel allows for unlimited access to Keystone and A-basin for about 175 for the season. Excellent deal considering military lift passes for them are 40 dollars a day.

Is Vail/Beaver Creek and option as a ski resort? Or do we have to just go to A-basin and Keystone? Sorry, it's just Beaver Creek is my favorite resort of all time!! :)

oh wow! Never been skiing or snowboarding!!! I used to do Buddy Warner (racing) since 2nd grade. I did that skiing. Then a few years ago, I got to the point where skiing isn't as fun because I've always raced, and it just wasn't a challenge anymore. So now I snowboard. I'm not the greatest snowboarder yet, but I can get down blue runs! But yeah, I'll go with anybody!

Interesting question. I would "guess" that you are stuck with local areas unless there is a way to accomdate people overnight at places like Vail. Isn't Vail about 3 hours away from AFA?

It's 2 maybe 2 and a half depending on traffic. My mom lives up there, so I might be able to spend time with her. She's going to keep all my gear.

Well I live in Michigan, so no mountains here, just man-made resorts. I started like a year and a half ago, and I've only been like 4 or 5 times, but I love it. I'm pretty decent; I can get down any run so far easily, and I can nail grabs+180's okay, but I'm definitely no pro, or even close. I can't wait to see what I can do with regular practice =D

You can go to any resort you want in Colorado. The liberty pass is only for the two I mentioned. So, unless you get the colorado pass (2-3x more expensive), then you would pay every day at the other resorts.
