Can anyone give some advice on the dance portion of the UArts audition? Dancing is my daughter’s weakest point, so when asked to prepare a short piece should she opt for ballet or jazz and use music or not? Thanks!

Hi inm! Good luck to your da on her audition. My da auditioned last spring at the Unifieds and did a short solo with music (cd player with her for this). She did a Fosse style jazz piece. She was happy with the way it went. It’s true she has a lot of dance experience and jazz is a favorite style. She ended up as a freshman this year at UArts and absolutely loves it. It seems like a wonderful school with very supportive teachers and an excellent curriculum. Working with a coach might also be a good idea for her dance piece - my da did it a lot on her own but again, has a lot of dance experience. I would go with the style your daughter feels best performing but for me jazz seems to be the style most schools were primarily interested in seeing.

Thanks Ormom. My D has a limited dance background, with tap being her strongest point (that certainly wouldn’t be an option on a carpeted floor though!) She is working with a private dance teacher this year to prepare her for auditions. I thought jazz would be the best choice, but thanks for the confirmation. I"m glad to hear your daughter’s loving UArts-we’ve heard nothing but positive feedback about the school. Do you mind me asking where else your D applied?

Dance is also my DD’s weakest part. She is dancing 2-3 times a week and is working with a coach next month to get a dance routine ready for Unifieds in LA.

oregontheatermom - I’m so glad to hear that your DD is happy at UARTS. My DD did the summer mt program there and had a great time. It is definitely one of the schools at the top of her list.

inm,

Tap is my D’s strongest also. She did do a tap sequence on the carpet for UArts and was accepted into the program. She just felt more comfortable doing tap. Granted, it was not a couple of “shuffle off to Buffalo’s”! Her routine had a lot of jazz in it, but it was tap.

inm - I sent you a private message.

Xatty, Thats good to know your d did a tap number- I wouldn’t have considered that an option because of the floor, but I’ll pass that along to my d as she and her teacher put a routine together. Thanks!

I don’t know if your D’s audition is over by now, but in case it isn’t, my D auditioned 2 years ago, and just did a routine she had learned from a musical she was in the summer before. It went fine. She was accepted and went 1.5 years ago. She is loving it soooo much. Good luck to your D.

Since the 2 minute dance is part of the audition at unifieds, do the kids have time to change into dance clothes during their audition, or should they wear dance attire for the entire audition?

My D wore dance tights underneath a short skirt with a leotard under a top. She did not change during the audition, but was able to move freely during her dance. Good luck.

Hi I am the student assistant at the dance audition. It’s a very simple jazz combo. A solo for the audition in Philly is not required. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

My d auditined for Univ of Arts in Chicago yesterday. She wore Dance attire, no skirt or dress over her tights. She was told you get 15 min. to do everything. She sang her songs, did her monologues and then her dance solo. There wasn’t a dance class type audition. At unifieds you dance your 2 minutes from a self or some other choreographed dance. She felt comfortable dressed in dance attire and other than the fact the space for her dance was VERY small and she couldn’t do her leaps and jumps or travel in any way, she thought the audition went well. Also did I mention there was a chandelier?
