My DD is planning to do the Unified auditions in LA and most of the schools she is auditioning for do not have a dance audition, but many of the schools say you can do a dance routine. She wanted to know what types of dance she should choreograph for this?
She thought she should have some ballet and some jazz. Any suggestions would really be appreciated.

My D’s dance teacher has choreographed a few pieces for prospective MT students. She always worked with their strengths, but it seems that most were modern with a very ballet foundation - lots of technique to show off. One student didn’t have a lot of ballet background, so his dance seemed more Broadway jazz. He did show off some gymastics/flexibility though. His was the exception. Most used MT song repertoire, although one girl did classical ballet two years ago. Hope that helped a little bit.

My D was at LA unifieds last year at the LAX Hilton. She had to dance on carpeted floors. It will probably be the same this year. So, whatever your D plans, make sure it is something she’s comfortable doing on carpet, or possibly some other surface. My D’s strength is in tap which, obviously, was not ideal!

I’m a bit confused, sorry if I sound ignorant! XD I thought that during the dance auditions, a routine was taught to the prospective students, and the auditionees didn’t have to choreograph their own?

EDIT: Oh! Are you saying that those who want to do a dance routine during Unifieds, but it’s not offered for that particular school, must create their own routine?

62442 - Yes, some schools (mostly at Unifieds, but some on campus as well) that do not do a dance call-type audition allow students to show a prepared piece. If that would be the case for any of the schools you are considering, the information about it should be on their auditions website.

I know of some kids that gave the schools at Unifieds a dvd of them dancing in addition to preparing a piece to show them, especially because, as xatty said, carpet is not conducive to your best performance. Good luck!

I think I noticed that this year the unifieds are at the Westin instead of the Hilton in Los Angeles. I know the auditiors were pretty unhappy last spring when the Hilton changed their audition rooms to smaller rooms the second day and my daughter did have to do her dance audition on carpet. Sounds like this year it may be different.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I will tell DD to keep in mind that she may be dancing on carpet. I like the idea of giving the auditors a DVD of the dance routine as well.
