Hello everyone! I’m getting down to the last of my applications and now I’m starting to focus on preparing for my auditions. Can anyone give me more information or tips regarding the solo dance at the U of Arts Unified auditions? The website says “If you are auditioning at the Unifieds or a regional site, prepare a short solo dance that demonstrates your technical proficiency.”

Since I’m not a dancer (I do take basic ballet/jazz, so I’m sure my teacher could whip up some easy choreography, haha), what would you suggest I include in my dance? What kind of music? I’ve seen some people say to use any kind of music, and to perform the style of dance you’re most comfortable with. If anyone could elaborate or let me know what they are doing/have done in the past, I would greatly appreciate it!

Hi there, my daughter auditioned for UArts at last year’s Chicago Unified. She had a 2 minute jazz dance ready that involved basic jazz/MT steps. She had it choreographed by a local teacher at a ballet/jazz dance studio and did it to “New York, New York”. It must have been just fine as she was accepted to the school! (Isn’t going there, however) One thing to keep in mind; in Chicago, at least, the UArts audition was in a very, very small, carpeted room, not even as big as your basic hotel room. And, there was a low hanging chandelier, so leave out your tap steps, high kicks and leaps! Uarts has dance classes at all levels, so don’t be worried if it’s not your strength!

Thanks so much! I will keep that in mind!

Another question since you did the Chicago Unifieds (same as me) - I’m assuming there was no dance call or callback process as in the campus auditions for UArts?

No dance call or callback, just the monologue, 2 songs (I believe) and a short, prepared dance with recorded music. The auditioner (head of department) did ask a couple of questions. Whole thing took less than 10 minutes.

Alright, that clarifies things for me! their website says to prepare 2 monologues and 2 songs, so I’m guessing they will probably not hear all four, like you said. thanks again!

Do remember that things can change from year to year, so have prepared everything they ask for, as you might be doing it all!

Definitely! and thankfully I talked to my dance teacher and she is glad to choreograph a dance for me - and make sure I practice in the studio AND on carpet! ;)

My son has Irish dance experience so he danced without music in his hard shoes on the carpet! His dance was rhythmic based, so he did not really require music. I think they just want to see how well you can move. He is a sophomore at Uarts and loving it.

good to know! I’m certainly not an accomplished dancer, but I do love dancing regardless of how good I am I think it’s key to show a great attitude and stage presence when doing dance auditions, and that will at least show the school that you have potential!

Just another quick question about the short dance at unifieds - I just scheduled my audition, and since the slot is 15 minutes, I am under the impression that I’ll be doing my dance with my songs/monologues. Or is the dance in a separate room? It doesn’t say anything about this on the website. Should I wear dance clothes or my regular audition dress for the audition?

2 years ago my D did her audition - same 15 minute slot. She did her monologues, songs, and individual jazz dance routine during her time with Charlie. The were in a carpeted room at the hotel in LA for Unifieds. (And she is attending UArts and absolutely loves it!). UArts has offered her everything and continues to be a fantastic school for her. Her dad and I could not be more pleased with the education and performance opportunities she has experienced. Please msg me if you have questions or I could put you in touch with my D. Best of luck!

Thanks for your input! What kind of clothes did your D wear to the audition?

As I recall she wore a pretty and kind of longish jersey top over capri length black leggings with character shoes for dancing. She needed to be able to move. It was kind of a clingy top - she also wanted it to “fit” enough to not look baggy (ie: like you are hiding something). I remember she really thought about what to take to Unifieds and several outfits were similar. With a few schools she had time to change between song / monologue and dance routine.

My other unified auditions have time to change into dance clothes in between, so that’s why the UArts audition was stumping me!! Thanks a bunch, I have a better idea of what to wear now!
