I think almost all do but occasionally some don’t. One of my friends was recruited for volleyball by Georgetown but then didn’t get in ED so Dartmouth took her RD. I think its uncommon but it happens.
Well if 24 % are athletes and there are 1500 kids per grade, that’s about 375 kids. 565 students accepted ED last year. If most athletes go ED, then a very large percent of that 565 were athletes.
Don’t forget the legacies. Also a big part of ED1 at any top school.
Dartmouth coaches as a collective get 175 spots for ED applicants (where student is pre-screened by Admissions and they will get in.). Coaches than have other “recruits” but these recruits are just on a “recruited athlete” list and have no guarantee of admission. Then there are probably 50 other admits for other hooked applicants and 40 or so for Questbridge. So ED is definitely helpful, but unfortunately not as much as might appear at first glance. Suspect admit rate for unhooked applicants is probably around 15-18%, which is still 200% of the RD accept rate. So materially improved chances still with ED!!
Didn’t Dartmouth release their ED decisions on December 6th/December 11th one time? I know it was the 14th last year.
@Milo321 – Wow, that would be exciting if they come out earlier this year.
Wouldn’t arrive earlier with more applications
Anyone got an email from the financial aid office? It said that it’s for internationl applicants but I’m a DACA student.
@homerdog Enrollment is closer to 1150. Last year, 2017, had over 1200 which was unusual.
To those who submitted first quarter grades: did your applicant portal reflect that your first quarter/mid semester grades have been received?
@YouTellMe No, I think it’s just included under transcripts. But someone was saying that Dartmouth emailed them asking for first quarter grades, so I think they’d let you know if they weren’t there.
Anyone heard anything about the number of ED applicants to Dartmouth this year? The Duke forum is awash in comments about the fact that ED applications jumped by 800 applicants resulting in an email to school GCs telling them Duke expects an 18% accept rate and a 12% accept rate for unhooked applicants. Uggh! This process is so daunting!
I’ve been scouring the internet for the number of Dartmouth apps, I can’t find anything yet but other top 20 schools have said that ED applications are increasing a huge amount (Brown increased by 20%!). So the trend suggests that Dartmouth would have gone up as well. Last year they received 2270 applications in the early round so my completely uneducated and not at all valid guess is that they probably received 2200-2600 applications this year.
@screamingkettle – All of what you write makes sense. Uggh.
Yes. I wonder at what point applying ED won’t even be much of a bump. It’s really meant for kids to show interest and for the school to protect its yield. Places like Dartmouth don’t struggle with yield and a good percentage of kids who are accepted RD attend, so ED isn’t as big of a deal there compared to other schools.
@AudreyKang Great to know. Did you not receive such a request?
My son’s counselor sent in quarterly grades two weeks ago at Dartmouth’s request. We had no idea, until we checked with the counselor yesterday based on info from this discussion. Quarterly grades can be wildly inaccurate (at least in my son’s school district) because a delayed test score or ungraded assignment can result in a C or even F for that moment in time even if all is well overall. We just lucked out this time, his quarterly grades were fine. Good to know in the future that students need to be mindful of quarterly grades when choosing ED.
@YouTellMe I didn’t, but I submitted my quarter grades along with my other grades, so there shouldn’t be a reason for them to ask?
Uh oh I really hope my quarterly report didn’t include my active classes cause I would be absolutely done.
@AudreyKang Oh. But then it is an automated request–you probably would have gotten it anyway.
