Dartmouth Chance?

I never thought I would do one of these threads. I always found them to be useless because nobody can honestly say if you will get in or not. However, reading everyone's chance me threads has me worried. Dartmouth is my number one school. I was born in NH but moved to New York and have wanted to go back to the Green Mountains for years. I go to a very rural school in WNY. Only 86 kids in my graduating class very few resources available. I know my SAT scores don't really make me stand out. So, here we go...

GPA
Weighted 95 A+ at my school would equal a 4.0 if I was on that scale.

Unweighted 92.5 A at my school would equal a 3.8 if I was on the 4.0 scale

Act 33
36 CR 36 SCI 29 MAT 29 ENG

SAT
2070
720 CR 680 MAT 670

SATII
720 US History 680 Chem 670 MAT I

Other things
Varsity Soccer 10 11 12
Captain senior year
Spring League Soccer 10 11

National Honor Society 11 12

Honor Roll 9-12

Back Stage Crew (Crew Chief '12) 9-12

Class Treasurer 9-12

Select Acapella group of about 20 chorus students 10-12

Summer Lifeguard (Head Lifeguard In charge of all scheduling, everything goes through me before it goes anywhere else.)

Youth Soccer Referee (Under 14 all the way down to 6)

Had a good Interview

No AP courses offered at my school However we have College In High School courses of which I have taken 6
College Chem, English Comp, Sociology, Problem Solving, Statistics, US History
Earning me Deans List recognition For each semester I was eligible.

2 Good Teacher Recs Just a standard Guidance Counselor rec
A very good peer rec, made my mother cry because she thought it fit me so well. It was written by my best friend of 13 years he knows me very well.

I wrote one of the best essays I've ever written for my app essay and expanded upon the brotherhood and bonding that the backstage crew experiences throughout the years for my short answer. I thought brotherhood was a good topic for a school strong on fraternities.

All of my EC's are things I have done for the sheer fact that I liked doing them.

So if more info is needed I'll be glad to provide it. I love New Hampshire and I love Dartmouth so please chance me.

Dartmouth is not a match. Sorry. your scores aren’t high enough. no AP will hunt you as well.

How can no AP hurt me when my school doesn’t even offer AP courses. I wasn’t questioning whether it was a match for me I know it’s a reach but by how much?

It is a pretty big reach with relatively low SATII’s. Your EC’s are typical as well. i’d say 10% chance of admittance at most.

I’ve literally done everything my school has to offer. Taken the most rigorous course load available and have the most rigorous course load of my entire senior class. I do know the SAT II are low I shouldn’t have ever taken them it isn’t required if you take the ACT with writing.

i suppose you don’t like my answer. you are being compared with students all over the country. Therefore standard tests scores such as SAT/AP scores are very important measurements. Without enough data, it is hard for colleges to determine how good you are academically. You did the best you can, i am not doubting. Might not be good enough though. you asked to chance you, i did and i gave you my reasons. you don’t have to like it.

I was literally wondering though if no AP courses can truly hurt me when I don’t even have the chance available to me. Wouldn’t the college courses I took balance out the fact that no APs exist at my school I mean I already have 29 credits. I realize I am being compared with students all over the country roughly 26,000 of them actually and wouldn’t Dartmouth see my what my school actually offers and factor that in?

First of all if Dartmouth’s your dream then go for it. Can you retake the SAT? I think 2250puts you in the 99+%, which isn’t that far away. Play up your musicality and athletics. Give them passion on the essay. G.L.

Sadly I can’t retake the SAT. I have already applied just like to do this because I get nervous seeing kids with 2300s get denied and kids with 2040s get accepted I just get really confused and that doesn’t help with the nerves.

I’m very sorry, but it seems like a high reach. Where else have you applied?
Will tou chance me back, please?

I say stay positive! Your ACT scores are descent for this school, and you HAVE done some good EC’s.

AP’s will hurt but not everyone is perfect!

Considering your circumstances, I’d say you’ve got about a…65% Good luck! *Fistbump

Score is not everything. Dart is reachable for you~

Your GPA is fine. Your ACT is good (but man those are some of the weirdest subscores I’ve seen). Your SAT is weaker but won’t kill you. Your SATII’s aren’t so great. Your EC’s don’t make you stand out in particular. Lack of AP’s hurt a lot. You probably should’ve tried taking at least two or three tests like APUSH or Lang and Comp. Your essays honestly need to be perfect to have a realistic chance of getting in.

If you held a gun to my head, I would say you won’t get in, but then again, what do I know? Stranger things have happened.

Your scores are completely fine. You don’t have to send in the SAT-- just send in your 33 (top 1%).

Your grades are also strong enough for Dartmouth, so in terms of academics and scores, you should not worry.

What I think will probably prevent you from getting in is your lack of extracurricular involvement. You have a few things listed, but they seem sporadic, and not very passionate. One thing you have to understand is that nearly everyone that applies to these Ivy League schools has the baseline grades and scores (which you do), what whittles down the acceptance rate to <10%, is the fact that most of those applicants cannot impress the adcoms with what they have done outside the classroom.

I may be completely wrong, come April 1, and you can rub your acceptance letter in my face, but from seeing tons of academically qualified applicants get completely barred from getting into Ivies, this is the best advice I can give!

Good luck

Between musical practice and stage crew I put 20 or so hours into The school productions each week. If that doesn’t show passion for something then i don’t know what does.

it seems like a reach (not a high or low reach tho) good luck!!!

I don’t understand the admissions process it all looks like complete luck to me. Kids with perfect scores getting denied with ridiculous stats. Then people getting accepted with the weakest stats I’ve ever seen it just doesn’t make sense. Gotta catch the admissions at the right time I guess.

If anyone could explain how admissions actually work that would be great.

How’d you end up doing? I am in a situation similar to what yours was. I come from a small school in rural Northern Minnesota, I’ve taken the toughest classes available (no AP, just CIS), top 5%, I have few EC’s but extremely devoted to them. First time I took the ACT I got a 32. One thing that may set me apart is that I’m a first generation American, my mum is an immigrant. Another odd thing about me is that I was an exchange student and lived in Brazil for 11 months when I was 15-16.

If you get your ACT to 35, write an outstanding essay, and apply ED you might have a shot. Good luck!
