Greek life: to join or not to join?
How many Southerners end up at Villanova?

Bump. This information is vital.

lots of couples, but there are definitely hook ups… You can definitely not drink and be social. while a lot of people here do drink, I feel like most only started drinking recently before coming to college or at the start of the year. There is definitely a good portion that dont drink at all and still go out all the time and have fun.Greek life- its up to you. depends on how much time you have to give to it. And there actually are a fair amount of southerners here. Most of the school is from NY, NJ, PA but then I would say California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, South Carolina, North Carolina and Maryland make up a lot of the student body too.

Here are my impressions of Villanova:

The girls are hot.

Drugs, drugs, drugs, drugs, and alcohol.

I’ve never heard of anyone studying or being a particularly high-achiever academically. If this answer frustrates you, go to #4 or to #1.

The girls are really, really attractive.

More drugs.

FRATS!

Basketball is really very important.

No minorities.

Sororities!

A good graduate nursing program.

^ Probably the most obnoxious post I’ve seen on CC…

Oh c’mon, I was just goofin’ around. Since when are people so insulted by hyperbole?

PS: Is your user name referring to the girth of your freakness? I’ve heard that’s important.

there’s a good share of both. i’ve met guys who’ve just wanted to hook up and guys who have seriously tried planning out their life with me after marriage. you can find whatever you want. the statistic here is that 60% of couples eventually get married so… that was a scary/awkward thing to hear when i first got here. not going to lie near the beginning of the year i tried not talking to anyone i didn’t really want to marry, but as i’ve spent more time here i see why the statistic exists. while there are always going to be dirtbags at every college, more often than not i’ve met boys who are really looking for nice girls to be with. i agree with hellojan that the campus is attractive. of course, if you know your type isn’t of the white persuasion your choice is slightly more limited than others. it’s not like rutgers where there’s clearly a good representation of just about every ethnicity. however this can be to your advantage. you know, you’re unique to that intrigues some guys. certain races by nature get clique-y, but no one goes out of their way to not be friends with anyone just because you’re not white if the “vanilla-nova” nickname scares you. you can definitely not drink and have a good time. you’d end up with a lot more money in your pocket too. sorry boys, $5 charge for you to get in those frat parties. girls, we’re free everywhere. i mean, that sounds harsh for the guys but that’s pretty much how it is with frats everywhere since you guys are competition for the brothers with the girls. greek life is expensive but if you have a few hundred dollars to throw away either semester, then by all means… personally i can barely afford to go here so i chose not to but it’s easier for me since i’m a girl. guys who love to party definitely should join one cuz it makes the whole thing a lot easier. just know that you’re going to, as it is with all greek life, go through initiations and stuff like that. be able to hold your alcohol. i didn’t know it was as prestigious as it is til i got here. people ask me where i go and i say “nova” and their first comment is usually “wow you must be really smart” that or “damn that school is expensive” lol. there aren’t too many southerners up here please come we love you guys! i’ve met about two and they’re doing just fine i love them they’re so nice :)

Great post, dbear. My daughter was accepted EA for engineering and depending on financial aid, will probably attend.

@ hellojan

Haha, didn’t catch the sarcasm. Honestly, you’d be surprised about how many people on CC really feel that way about Nova just because it isn’t top 25. Great school IMO; underrated though.

And Thickfreakness is in no way related to my freakness lol. It’s the name of an album (my fave) by The Black Keys.

@ dbear

Wonderful post – makes me glad I applied.

No sweat. 'Nova is a great place. Let the haters hate.

haha i love this site it definitely calmed my nerves down about a lot of college stuff with real opinions so i’m glad i could help! feel free to ask whatever no matter how silly/obnoxious you think it might be and don’t be afraid to message me if you can’t ask it on the boards.

addendum: ROTC (army/navy) kids get cliquey… but then again they wake up 5am and probably so a lot of bonding since they run on the same hours and extra classes.

funny tidbit a few of us realized when we were all cramming for finals week: our library is named “Falvey Memorial Library” so its initials are literally “■■■”

The southerners question is interesting… Last time I checked the ‘Accepted EA stats’ thread, I was the ONLY ONE from Colorado!!! How will a Westerner fare out East?

@TGrace - absolutely fine. west coast is fairly well represented here. can’t say i’ve met anyone from colorado, but plenty from california and washington state

@OP

What dominates hook-ups or relationships? - i’m just a freshmen so right now i can say i’ve only really seen 3 relationships, while hooking up at a frat party is a weekly occurrence. the most awkward person i’ve ever met lives in my hall. He hooked up with a good looking girl at a frat just this past weekend. her sobriety is questionable, but that’s besides the point
What’s the atmosphere of Villanova? - incredibly casual and relaxful. By no means am I from a wealthy family, but I’ve never felt out of place. There is really no pressure to do anything, including academics.
Is it considered prestigious? - as I’m in business school, a resounding yes. Since BW keeps on pushing us up the rankings, everyone has heard of us. My Uncle in Michigan who basically creates accounting firms and then sells them has consistently been hiring Nova grads for the past 3 years. Incredible relations with Boeing, J&J, etc.
Can you not drink and be social? Great friend that lives next door doesn’t drink and he has a great time. Always finds something to do with friends whether it be movie, KOP mall (basically more store square footage than Mall of America), Flyers game, Nova basketball, going out but not drinking, etc. If this is really your thing consider the Healthy Living/Substance Free Learning Community in Katherine Hall
Greek life: to join or not to join? - I’m rushing right now. Obviously, some of the Frats are not for everyone, and may seem like typical frat guys. However, there are some that are literally the nicest guys you’ll ever meet and don’t pressure you to do anything and hazing is not bad for those frats. The majority of my girl friends just rushed sororities over break and love it more than anything.
How many Southerners end up at Villanova? If you consider Florida as the south, alot. If not, then just some. I’ve met a few from Georgia but not many others besides that. Then again, I’m only a freshman

How happy are you at Nova?
BC or Nova or UVa?

pretty happy. the only thing i’ve recently been unhappy about is how there are no food places open at 4am. when i visited kids at rutgers there were always food places open and delivering. then again, i probably shouldn’t be eating at 4am anyway so…

i hear BC people are more competitive against each other than nova. this is not to say we’re not competitive… i just mean i see a lot of cooperation and people studying together and everyone’s willing to lend a hand. i think nova has more of a family-vibe… but it’s in the suburbs make sure you’re okay with that. i lived in the suburbs so it’s perfect for me cuz i don’t like the city too much. too busy and distracting. as for BC, boston’s a really cool place if you do like the city. i’ve also heard good things about UVa. UVa is a public school so if i ever actually applied there i think i would’ve gone there if i lived closer to it esp since it’s ranked higher and it’s public school so there’s even more exposure to different cultures. if you’re a catholic/christian (i’m not too orthodox but that’s how i was raised so i go to church and whatnot) it’s nice cuz most kids are aware of what kind of principles you’ve been raised with and this is great especially with the whole dating aspect. however, like i said, keep in mind the distance you have to commute to get to school. i have friends who have to take 6hr train ride to north carolina and they hate it so keep that in mind. there are a lot of jersey kids here for the reason that it’s far enough to leave jersey, but not far enough that you couldn’t go home for the weekend if you wanted without much hassle.

I’m looking forward to a totally different environment. I know someone who went to VU and came from Denver and she said people are always curious about life out here… no, we don’t all wear cowboy hats and own ranches!

I’m just as curious about East coast life, however.
Thanks so much, I’m really glad to hear it won’t be weird to be one of the few not from NJ, PA or NY! :)

I thought Denver was destroyed by a volcano because the residents of South Park diverted the lava flow there…

hahahaa I loooove South Park XD

lol i wish there was a “like” button under bluewords’ comment

Oh that Volcano thing was just a hoax to keep all the Californians and Texans from continuing to show up
Nothing against anyone from CA or TX, but this time of year it seems every other car on the road has a license plate from one of those two bound for the slopes. Coloradans joke about it.

South Park is a real place, too! And so is Casa Bonita!
