Daughter Accepted but no mention of award(gpa 3.9 gpa unweighted, 24 Act, rank top 20% -class of 425

My daughter found out today via email that she was accepted at Miami University@Oxford Oh but no mention of any scholarships or anything.
If its not mentioned does that mean you received zilch??

http://miamioh.edu/admission/merit-grid/

It looks like she needs a minimum ACT of 27 to be considered for merit if I’m reading the website correctly.

Are you asking about merit aid, need-based aid or both?

some schools provide aid in a separate letter or email. It wouldn’t hurt to check with the school in a day or so to be sure, if you haven’t heard

Merit letter came a couple days after letter in mail of acceptance for son and a week or so after that decision a letter about Honors. (Not really sure what son applied to exactly, but I found 3 letters with separate dates)

Are you instate for Ohio?

Some schools will accept a retest if she studies and tries the ACT again. It might be worth asking them about if it is a top choice for her.

If she has a 24 ACT, I don’t think she would qualify for most merit awards. Wait until the FA letter comes separately.

As intparent mentioned, perhaps she can retake the ACT and up her score.

We received notice of acceptance on the website on Feb. 1 also. No mention of merit yet. My OOS son has 1500 SAT, 3.7UW GPA, so we are hoping for something! We are also waiting on a decision from the music department for acceptance into music composition minor.

Did you look at the scholarship website?

Looks like an ACT 27+ is needed. Likely an ACT 24 is low for the school.

Edit…an ACT 24 is low for the school…it’s bottom quartile.

Did she apply to Kent State, Youngstown State or Cleveland State?

She might get some merit there and the direct costs are lower than at Miami OH.

^^
Good advice! Are those schools still accepting apps and awarding merit? At those schools, would an ACT 24 be considered merit worthy?

I got $7,000 merit from Miami U. My stats are GPA 3.9 unweighted and 4.3 weighted. ACT 25, lot of extracricullar activities and volunteering. Took extremely rigirous course (took all AP and CCP classes during junior and senior year) and great essay.

Wright state ($3,000 merit), cleveland state ($3,000 merit) and kent state ($4000 merit)

I was surprised that Miami U gave me most scholarship despite being more presitgious than those other university.

PS I applied to Miami U in late October and got acceptance notice in mid december.

The NET cost is what matters…not the amount of aid you receive!

Cleveland State and Kent state cost about $26,000 a year.

Wright State is $23,000 a year.

Miami is about $32,000 a year.

These totals include personal expenses, tuition, fees, room, board.

So…a $7000 merit award from Miami leaves a net cost of $25,000.

A $4000 merit award from Kent leaves a net cost of $22,000.

A $3000 merit award from Cleveland State leaves a net cost of $23,000.

A $3000 merit award from Wright State leaves a net cost of $20,000.

@AS12345 your merit award was higher at Miami…but your actual net cost is lower at Cleveland State, Wright State, and Kent.

I know that but I can commute to Miami University from home.

Also I want to do pre-med and pre-med program is better at Miami University as well as med school admission rate.

@AS12345 not wishing to highjack this thread…but…this student can NOT commute to Miami.

Also…what is this “premed major” you are talking about? You can major in ANYTHING and apply to medical school as long as you have taken the courses required to do so. I’ve never heard of “premed” being a major.

@WayOutWestMom your thoughts on premed as a major?

Anyway…that’s a little off topic.

Back to this poster. It doesn’t seem that this OP will have enough money to attend Miami…unless need based aid fills the gap.

It does exist. It’s designed for kids who can’t make it in a regular major along with pre-med pre-reqs. It has the worst results in med school admissions because med schools want to see a solid major (biochemistry or philosophy or economics or Spanish or music or CS…) AND top grades in pre-med pre-reqs/advance science classes - not a cobbled-together major with no depth.

@thumper1 I will major in biology while do co-major with pre-med (you can do that at miami).

My parents live in Oxford so I can commute from home (I have to stay with my parents but it is better than paying $13,000 and I can move out after my sopomore year).

@AS12345

So if you move out your sophomore year…how will you pay your living expenses? Plan ahead!

BUT back to the OP…

As it stands, the OP needs sufficient need based aid to attend Miami. So…they need to,wait for the need based financial aid award, and see if that’s enough to cover the costs to,attend.

In the meantime…that poster also needs to consider less costly options.
