We expected my daughter to be accepted or rejected, but didn't expect this:

Congratulations! After a careful and thorough review of your academic record, you have been admitted to the 2012 Spring University of Florida freshman class?

The Admission Committee made every effort to accommodate your preferred term of entry; however, this year's highly qualified freshman applications along with the university's limited space made this impossible.

I got the same thing, what dose it mean though? what do they expect you to do for a semester? Dose this mean you are less worthy than the other students?

Can you study abroad through UF for fall?

I also wanted to rush for a sorority, am i still aloud to do that?

There are a couple things u can do. You can request a trem change or go to community college for the Fall semester. UF will let you earn 15 hours from the CC.

Hello Chia,
First I would like to make it clear, that any student accepted to UF are not borderline. As a matter of fact, all students that were accepted to summer, fall or spring received the same letter. My daughter was accepted for the spring, not her preferred term since most of her friends were admitted for the fall. Her school career has been stellar, filled with AP’s, leadership positions, honor societies, all GPA’s very high, SAT of 1320 and ACT of 29. Please read the link attached to better clarify what the reasoning or rationale of UF starting freshman over 3 semesters: [News: Ditching Fall Semester - Inside Higher Ed](http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2010/09/20/florida). While the article states this won’t begin until 2013, I can’t help but think this is new for this year. I’ve also been told other colleges do this as well, such as Brandeis.
Congrats to all who were admitted to UF!

@ deathby fries: you can rush in the spring. my sis did it. and apparently its easier to get in during spring because most houses have a lot of bids to give out.

@Concernedmomma, this is not new this year, UF has been doing this for years. A guidance counselor from the Gainesville area told me that they admit the top students for the fall semester and the rest get moved to summer and then spring. This is not to say that those admitted to summer and spring are not qualified, just that there were others more qualified. There is also a summer program for borderline students, but not everyone admitted to summer is part of that program. You can request a term change and sometimes that works, but it is on a space available basis. Congrats to all that were accepted, regardless of what term!

Just send an email to freshman@ufl.edu with an explanation why your daughter will benefit from entering UF in the desired term. This also happened to me, but I just wrote a formal letter with an explanation. Warning: Make sure this is done by May because that is when the committee reviews these requests.

@fishymom; You are correct. I misspoke about it being new for UF, only new for me and was unaware.

After reading many informed and misinformed posts about who gets in and why, who is more/less qualified, summer through spring admissions.

I’m with you, congrats to all who were accepted regardless of the term.

I just spoke with someone in admissions and this is what was said:

29,000 applications sent to UF from incoming freshmen
12,000 was accepted for summer and fall, double their usual quota
900 more spots were created in the spring term because these kids were too good to turn away and they did not want to deny them.

I think when someone is reading this post, what they must know…no kid is borderline!

@HarrietH, my daughter sent an email for term request. Below is a small part of the response highlighting how many they accepted and how many they will enroll.

From UF…

We offered admission to 12,000 students with the intent that only 6,400 would enroll — our freshman class is strictly limited to only 6,400 students because of space limitations and budget constraints.

Students admitted for Spring 2012 have the opportunity to take up to 15 credits at another state institution while waiting on Spring term and have those credits transferred. More information on this will be included in your application packet.

Where does the admitting twice the number of students this year come from? Every year they have roughly 6500 spots and know that about half will generally matriculate at UF, so they admit 12K. This is nothing new.

Dear Concernedmomma, Thank you for posting the link about spring acceptances. Although other colleges do and have done it in the more recent past, it still doesn’t help when you’re trying to succeed in a new environment. We contacted Santa Fe Community about taking courses there and they said my son would be considered a “new student” which would put him as a “transfer” in the Spring for UF but I don’t think that is correct. I am trying to find out if he needs to apply formally to Santa Fe or can just take the 15 credits in basic general ed courses as available until the Spring. If anyone knows how to proceed, please email.

Jazz2- I was admitted to the spring 2011. I went to Santa fe for the fall semester, I formally applied did orientation and that whole routine. After the semester ended I had my transcripts sent to UF. If you have any other questions, i’d be glad to try to help you because it can be quite confusing.

happened to me. I emailed them an essay about how I am a hard worker and really wanted to be accepted into fall. Got in for fall. Its fine, just email them an essay :)

MarionetteNotes, do you mean that you sent UF that essay this year and you will be a freshman at UF in the fall? Or do you mean that you sent the essay and were accepted in a previous year? I’m really curious because someone posted in another thread that UF said they didn’t grant any term change requests for 2012 spring admits.
