Daughter received $10K per year scholarship -- out of state

My daughter found out she received a $10k per year scholarship to University of Miami. She would be an out of state student. We are curious if there are more opportunities for in state (Florida) students.

She has a lot of other acceptances with a lot more scholarship dollars. She loves UM – but we don’t qualify for financial aid. Is there a way she can ask for more scholarship dollars?

The University of Miami is a private college so it makes no difference if you are in state of out of state.

It is a private school, but Florida residents do have a lot more scholarship opportunities. Residents are eligible for Bright Futures (about $7000 at the top level), a resident grant (was FRAG, now EASE? of about $4k, so that’s over $10k that a resident is getting. Also, there are a lot of local and state scholarships that can only be used instate.

The state grants do add up and Miami knows that in state students come with more money than OOS.

You can always ask, and there might be talent scholarships (music, dance, art), department scholarships, or just more merit. You can also ask if there are any local scholarships an OOS student would be eligible for. I found out about one that was only for female student at one of 4 schools in the Orlando area; it was on the school website and you did not have to be a Florida resident.
