Davidson vs. Georgetown

I'm currently a transfer student, and I have been accepted to Davidson and Georgetown (the College). I know they are both very different schools which is why I am having a lot of trouble comparing the two and ultimately making a decision. If you have any opinions, I'd love to hear anything/everything you have to say. Also, I am hoping to go to law school one day and I am worried that getting close to a 4.0 at Davidson is nearly impossible and it would be easier to maintain a high GPA at Georgetown, is this true? And does this mean that the quality of learning at Davidson is greater than the quality of learning at Georgetown?

Again, any insight at all would be greatly appreciated, I am genuinely confused. Thanks.

bump…can anyone (maybe amplifiar, if she’s still around?) comment on how bad the grade deflation at Davidson really is? Is it at all possible to graduate with a 3.8+ as an economics major if you really put in the effort?

It’s probably much easier to get into a good law school from Gtown than from Davidson, just because law schools are primarily interested in GPA regardless of school or major (or so I’ve heard). I just graduated from Davidson, and I can safely say that one should not count on getting a 3.8+ GPA, especially as an econ major. To give you a sense of how hard it is, in this years graduating class there were 32 out of 427 people who graduated magna cum lade, that is with an overall GPA of a 3.75 or higher. That translates to the top ~7.5% of the class. Only 5 or 6 of those people were econ majors. It’s possible, but it takes a ridiculous amount of effort.

That being said, I don’t know what your preferences are. If getting into a top law school takes a back seat to your college experience (and if you like the atmosphere at Davidson), then by all means go to Davidson. I have no idea as to how the quality of the teaching differs between the two schools, but I’d say about half the professors at Davidson are stellar and the other half are simply OK. The one thing they all have in common is very available office hours. On the other hand, I do have a fair number of friends at Gtown who love the school and end up working for their professors.

But don’t let anyone talk you into going one way or the other, just decide for yourself. If you want, you can PM me for more info.

I think the student “vibe” is very different at Georgetown than at Davidson. PM me if you want more info.
