Davis Honors Challenge

Is DHC a big step, from the regular students. I will be applying to Med School, four years later and if i get admitted into DHC will it help a lot? Also how is DHC? is it as difficult as i am perceiving it, like an AP course in high school.

Thanks in Advance

all of your classes in college will be beyond AP level, despite some overlap in material. college is more rigorous and demanding than high school. that said, i don't think DHC should be all that hard -- some describe it as "GPA padding".

will people who are in DHC have a better chance of getting into Med School than i do? basically if my GPA is higher without DHC and a guy with DHC has a lower GPA, who has a better chance of getting admitted into Med School?

I just got into DHC this year as a continuing student (About 50% of applicants get in). DHC is not significantly harder, it actually allows for closer contact with your professors which will be helpful when it comes time for letters of recommendation. Basically you just get a small project depending on your class, which seem like it could be fun, and you can also take large classes where you do group projects. DHC seems more about closer interaction with students who like certain subjects and want to go more in depth through projects/term paper and closer interaction with professors (some classes are 300+ ppl, but the DHC section of that class is like 4 or 5 people I heard). I still have yet to take a DHC class, but I'm signed up for Anthropology for Fall quarter.

PS: I doubt it will help you on your application for med school, but at the same time I doubt it will bring down your gpa. Use it to meet motivated students, meet professors, and learn a little more about areas you're interested in.

Hey, I feel a little intimidated to apply for it my first year because I want to adjust to college life first. It is possible to apply for it sophomore year? I want to do DHC my second year in college so am I able to do that?

yea, u can apply during your freshman year (and get in for your sophomore year), but there are no opportunities to join it later. You can continue DHC thru senior year.

yikes. that's really risky if i don't make it! it is too late for me to write the essays now :/

<a href="http://dhc.ucdavis.edu/html/incomingfirst.html%5B/url%5D">http://dhc.ucdavis.edu/html/incomingfirst.html</a></p>

You still have time. They essays are really easy to write, you basically say why you want to join the program (talk specifically about the seminars/challenge sections/etc. Say how you would like professor interaction and how it would benefit you.

<a href="http://dhc.ucdavis.edu/html/components.html%5B/url%5D">http://dhc.ucdavis.edu/html/components.html</a></p>

and then talk about your extra curriculars (briefly) from your highschool for the essay about "what you will bring to DHC", show that you are a capable person that's enthusiastic. for the second essay.

for the 3rd essay, talk more in depth about your extra curriculars and stuff.

With that, you will probably get in. With DHC, you also get access to a DHC-only computer lab, and other stuff, and you get to register very early for "Challenge Sections" for some courses which are +1 unit and guarantee you a spot in that course.

They said acceptance rates range from 30%-50%.

Goodluck on your application!

do you recommend incoming freshman to apply for it, or do you think we should wait a year before applying, to get situated to the course load as well as the environment of college in general?

There's nothing wrong with waiting one year. I would recommend incoming freshman to take about 12-13 graded units and 1 freshman seminar/study abroad seminar so you don't lose many units but you also figure out how much coursework you can handle. For the first and second quarters, I took only 13 graded, but now I'm taking 15 and I'm handling it pretty well. DHC requires you take a lot of extra courses and stuff, so it may be better for apply after the 1st year after you figure out what you really want to major in (so that you don't take honors courses in Computers or something and then later decide to major in Political Science), and figure out how to manage your time better. DHC also requires you to write a large essay/present a large project at the end of the year, so it will be a little more coursework. If you are confident that you can handle the courseload, then you should apply to DHC now. If you want to be on the safe side, you can apply to DHC next year. The scenario that you really do not want is to do badly the first few quarters because a lot of freshman get depressed/discouraged and don't do as well the rest of college. I find that the people who do well the first quarter, do well the rest of college. Ultimately, it's up to you: if GPA is of the utmost important to you, then you should apply as a continuing student which is just as good as freshman. If you have an incredible determination and don't mind not socializing sometimes even when all your roommates are partying, I wouldn't recommend DHC the first year.

Once again, goodluck.

Look over the course listings...is their an honors section you would like? UC Davis has been critizied for not encouraging or having enough classroom discussion..depending on what classes you take, a smaller honors class may provide you with an opportunity to ask questions, to discuss ideas and to get to know the professor better. I do not think that DHC would be more impressive than being on the deans list...but the connections made in these classes might be refreshing.

DHC is definately NOT more impressive than dean's list. People with sub 3.0 college gpa get in. Take the program for the program, not for the name.

I heard something about DHC students having to take courses or seminars which they don't receive usuable credits for? Does anyone know any information on this.

Looks like a good program -- how do I get in?

Well...for next year, you were supposed to apply by June 5th...but there are in-school deadlines for 2nd semester, I think.
