Deadlines Extended by Colleges

Market forces at work.

Wow...even Swarthmore extended the deadline. That's a little bit unnerving.

Has this not happened in years past? If not, then it must be something to do with the current economy. I can see why the smaller LACs might have had a drop in enrollment, but what about state schools like A&M and UT? Recently, there have been articles about UT being forced to accept too many students because of TX's top 10% rule. It seems odd that they are extending the deadline to allow more students to apply.
I would have thought more students would be applying to the state schools. Maybe more students are planning to live at home and go to community colleges, causing a drop even in state school applications.

cpq, that's what has me stumped. Why would UT need to extend the deadline? According to the website, it's because people were surprised by the moved-up deadline this year.

hey, does anyone have a list of the colleges that extended their deadlines?

as far as i know

texas A n M
Colorado

ConnColl extended their deadline because of the "bad weather" and "ice storms". It made me happy, because I submitted my supplement late for them.
Basically, from the things I read, there just aren't enough applicants this year. A lot of people are going for their instates instead of their expensive reach school.
The instates probably know that a lot of people are just realizing their situation, so more qualified applicants might be setting their sights to the instates. A lot of people would rather get half tuition grants at an instate school and then pay the other half than only being able to pay one quarter of a expensive, reachy private school tuition get approx. a quarter of the tuition in grants, then make the rest up in loans and such.

wht?????
concoll extended????????
****!!!!!!!!!!

i didnt submit my app cuz i couldnt come up wth an essay on the deadline..........

It wasn't really officially extended with an actual date.. They posted a message on the site saying, "We are aware that secondary schools and households in several parts of the country have been affected by recent ice storms that have prevented students from submitting application materials according to the above deadlines. We are also aware that many sources publish our Supplement deadline as January 1. For these reasons, we will accept late Supplements, applications and other admission materials in the coming weeks. Please submit these materials as soon as you are able. If you have concerns, please contact admission@conncoll.edu."
any moooooore?

for the most part, only scrubby colleges are extending their deadlines...which sux, because they keep bombarding my inbox with their crap...Swarthmore is a surprise though

WUSTL did also,
1/15 to 1/20
also raised the otal cost of tuition to 50,700
very disheartening.

njaznpremed: only "scrubby" colleges? UNC Chappel Hill, WUSTL, Emory, and Texas A&M are considered scrubby? Haha wowww. That's all I'm going to say about that.

wow. thanks for letting me know that Emory, WUSTL, and the likes are such scrubby colleges. I would never want to get an education from one of...those...

I was surprised when I got an email from Emory. Maybe this will make getting into reaches easier. I feel pretty bad for places like GWU and NYU

Why in the WORLD would you feel bad for NYU? Maybe if these schools offered better FA people would be more inclined to enroll..

Ah! Is the deadline being extended for everyone or just for a targeted group of high achievers? (It really irks me to feed the egos of the super-nerds that inhabit this board).

Swarthmore sent my daughter a post card extending the date. She was not going to apply to Connecticut College because she thought she had missed the deadline for the supplement, which was December 15, but the common app website allowed her to submit it on the 31st of December. Daughter never intended to apply to Swarthmore but is doing so now.

SWARTHMORE DID NOT EXTEND THEIR DEADLINE

They sent a select few postcards giving them extensions and it waived their app fee.
I believe it was only to minorities.
