momz, if you daughter's room is being turned into a quad or a 6 bed room, is your associated room and board fees being cut in 4 or 6 also? I would bet not. this is where helicopter parents come in very handy. we know the financial issues, when people are being taken advantage of and how dangerous it can be to put too many people into one area. that is why we are the adults, and the kids are the kids. again, these administrators dig their own graves by doing stuff like this.

Although most students would prefer to be on campus, if the apartments or hotels or not too far, they would be preferrable to being assigned to doubles that have been turned into triples of quadruples, without extra desks, closet space or drawers. In my freshman year, I was assigned to a room that had been meant to be a single but was turned into a double. It had one single (small) desk. Luckily, we were moved into a proper double before either of us had to sit at the desk to write papers. At the time, we did not even have a typewriter between us. Today's kids come with a huge amount of electronic stuff that takes up space.

We have been told fees will be reduced but not by the percentages you ask about. Also each student will have a desk, dresser and closet/wardrobe. Until final assignment is given I'm not doing a whole lot. But I will get involved if I feel it is to my Ds best interest. My H and I are looking into buying a condo near campus for future housing as I feel all these kids will be scrambling next year. We are waiting to make sure D ends up sticking it out and wanting to return next year. Older sister withdrew from Cal and changed schools her freshmen year so we want to be sure.

MomZ that is a smart idea. We looked at a school that is very generous with merit aid, but the kids have trouble getting housing after freshman year. All the merit aid $ to lowere the tuition bill will get put into rent and then I'll need to dip extra into my pocket, plus then there would need to be a car since it is in the suburbs. I realized in 2 minutes that this school would end up costing me more because of housing problems. S will not apply.
