Update: I tried getting in touch with my assigned coordinator. She’s in the process of getting in touch with some of the departments I would need help with. However, I won’t be hearing anything for a while–she’s going to be out of the office for the next week.

I’m not a fan of the waiting game, but I don’t know what to do for this coming week while I wait until next week.

Agree with making a chart, or a “top ten list” - things that are insurmountable and things that are doable. We had to do that process with my son in the last few days, it is painful but it works.

Eeeeesh, you guys. I’m not sure what I’m going to do… Remember how I said spring transfer students are basically lowest priority for registering of classes? Well, it’s way worse than my coordinator led me to believe. I can only register for classes at orientation and spring transfer orientations are… the last two days before classes start.

My coordinator told me I would be able to get in under a MUCH earlier orientation session but it seems she must’ve misunderstood the orientation schedule because the one she told me to register for doesn’t exist. I can’t contact her about it until later either because she’s out of the office for a good two weeks.

Can you contact the Dean and explain that the person you were referred to is gone for two weeks and left you to register for a session that doesn’t exist. Since you have a lot of advanced classes (no point in retaking classes you’ve already taken and you’re there for math) and the reason you’re in this predicament is that THEY did not step up to the plate, they should be able to find you a registration date that allows you to take the classes you need.
BTW, with a 4.0, why aren’t you in the Honors College? Or are you in the Honors College but TxTech doesn’t offer Early Registration to Honors students? (If you’re not in the honors college, can you try and get in for the Spring? If you are, indicate so, as Honors students often have registration earlier than other students)

I contacted the Dean instead, and she actually contacted the orientation office. A lady from the orientation office actually called me earlier this morning to explain to me that the quoted orientation session does in fact exist and she didn’t know where I was getting the idea that it didn’t.

Um, well I contacted the orientation office myself a few days prior and spoke to someone who told me it didn’t. I don’t think it was miscommunication or a misunderstanding on my part either–I distinctly remember being disappointed when I heard it didn’t exist and I asked the guy on the phone at the orientation office to put me in the earliest session possible. The one he put me in was just a few days before the semester started.

So that instantly brightened my day! :)

As for the Honor’s College, I’m not in it because I never applied for it. Right now, it’s also too late to apply for this spring. The Honor’s College is nice, I’ll say–special classes that fill up slower than other classes where you’re almost guaranteed a seat in a good section time. I guess that’s a bucket list for later though.

Honors College: Apply anyway - call the person in charge, explain your situation (4.0, prevented from attending due to housing issue being sorted by the Dean, etc). If you have a 4.0, you belong there - plus it’d solve all kinds of other problems

A really nice pro of the psychologist I’m seeing right now is that he is free to students since it’s at the university psychology department of the university I was attending for like a week earlier this fall. I’m not a student anymore, but they let me by since I’d paid the medical fee which was never refunded since I withdrew too late.

Excuse me if I don’t make sense in this post, but I’m just throwing the pieces down and hoping you can understand what I mean simply because I can’t make heads or tails of how to properly say it. This isn’t another plea for help, but rather what options might I be able to take? I’ll be printing out a copy of this to take to my next counseling appointment and get a professional opinion, but it’s always nice to hear from others.

I’m not even sure what’s going on anymore. My coordinator seems to have disappeared. I think I might have to take things into my own hands again.

Can you contact the Dean again, and recap your story, then that your coordinator seems to have disappeared again? Mention that you’ve already taken classes Math X and Z, which is unusual for Spring transfers, and you’re trying to ensure you’ll be taking the classes you’re supposed to.

Today was orientation. I managed to get registered for classes today!

I did investigate the possibility of changing my major to computer science or computer engineering. Unfortunately it doesn’t look good in terms of cost and time remaining to complete the degree: another 80 sch over the course of four years and I don’t think I have the funds to do that. I’m still waiting to hear back from the engineering department on any available scholarships once the semester ends.

Housing is still a mystery. I turned in an application a few weeks ago and they told me that I would be randomly assigned a spot from the available pool.

That’s great news about orientation and being able to register for classes!

Maybe you could keep the math major and add computer science as a minor? Anyways it is a start and you will figure out the rest as you go.

I would also keep in contact with your friend there, didn’t she help you find an apartment before? Maybe she can give you some tips on who is looking for a roommate or can even let you stay there for a brief time if things with housing don’t work out. But I’m rooting for you.

Getting registered for classes and being told you will get a room from the available pool is great! You may wish to call up housing and see if you can get on the phone with someone with some power/authority and explain that you are supposed to be placed in the Honors dorm, and is there anything they can do? It is probably worth a bit of a push to be settled into a better situation where you can thrive.

Congratulations for your resilience Cameraphone!
Did you get the classes you needed/wanted?
Did you talk to the Dean regarding Honors Housing
(and solving the Housing issue)?

Classes: I’m waitlisted in one of the classes I want, but I had to make full time before all good class options were taken since today was orientation. I’m in the classes I need without a doubt, but there’s some I want to get into that I can’t yet because there’s a waitlist. Thankfully they’re not miles long. Only 5 people max on these and I’m 2nd in queue.

Financial aid: I forgot, I might have a shot at getting the scholarships I lost reinstated for the summer. I still kept my 4.0 and I was told that there might be incentive for them to help me because I still have a 4.0. Might be. No guarantee. I forgot to ask today though.

Thanks for the replies. It feels good to know people are still listening.

I have been following this thread for months, and it really makes me cringe. I can’t help but think that if a knowledgable adult would advocate for camera phone (with the proper Texas sensibilities), all this tomfoolery would be dissolved in the matter of a couple of days, and he would be where he is supposed to be. Take a laid-back, depressed, inexperienced kid with, at best, laissez-faire parents and throw him to officials who make an art of avoiding work and passing on blame, and it really is an uphill battle. I feel for you camfone!

Is there any way you can make the 2 hour drive on Tuesday and stand at the office door (at 8am) of Michael San Francisco? Do not speak only to Irene Cox- her job is to keep Michael from being bothered by giving ‘pat’ answers to people or using other techniques to make them go away. If you have to speak to Aliza Wong, she will work, too. I would not go to “Assistant Dean” or below. Maybe show up with a bag of food and sit in the hallway outside their door until they agree to see you. Be willing to camp out and get some action. You may call in advance (on Monday) and try to get a personal appointment; but either way, make it happen.

You actually have everything you really need right now. However, the dean should be reinstating scholarships since you tried very hard but were unable to go to school in the Fall- that is the university’s fault (at least partially) and the Dean can access all the resources of the university (including discretionary unallocated funds) to make it right. The Dean also should be putting you in the Honors program, making sure you are in Honors housing, and hooking you up with an undergraduate research mentor. As @MYOS1634 states, you need to be sure they know your full story- everything shared on these dozen pages here. It really will not take long to tell, but it needs to be thorough.

You should be starting to look for Summer placement right now as well. Check out the REUs- great experience and they come with a stipend + travel funds.

Math/CS can be worked in 9 months, once you have some momentum and the faculty know you. You right now need to get “into” the school, and become known. You need to come in at the right level. This Honors stuff is important in making a great first impression and will color your entire tenure. It may even mean the difference of having the option to double major or to switch majors to CS. It is important for you to take a day and drive down there and meet face-to-face with a Dean.

…But I’m not going to be moving into the residence halls tomorrow. At least I don’t think. I can but I told my parents that I wanted to wait until Monday because there’s some things I still need to do here (read: I haven’t begun packing)
My parents are off tomorrow (Sunday) but my sister wanted to be included, which she’s off on Monday. My parents aren’t off though (I don’t think). The plan is to leave Monday though, as it officially stands.
I haven’t bought a parking permit either because the parking permit website is kinda sketchy because no browser I have will access the website since the SSL software the website uses has a major security flaw that all modern day browsers refuse to connect to now. So… What to do there?
I haven’t bought textbooks either but class starts on Wednesday, so that gives me a few days to actually buy them from the bookstore.
Well, start packing. You don’t want to arrive late to your big day!!!
Don’t delay. Jump out ! THIS IS FINALLY HAPPENING!!!
I wouldn’t buy from the bookstore. If you have your list of books, start checking out the internet, amazon, used book, rentals, etc. Campus bookstores tend to charge 30% more than “regular” bookstores.
OP definitely DO NOT buy from the bookstore. As a student you’re eligible for 6 months of free Amazon Prime, so if you need your books fast, you can get them with free two day shipping (and likely lower prices) from there. Good luck!
