My daughter was nominated by her school as a candidate for Jefferson Scholars, sent in the JS form, and subsequently applied to U.Va. It didn't occur to her to list the JS nomination among her honors when she applied to the university. We just came back from a regional Scholars reception at which she got a handout which states that JS nominees account for 10% of the accepted students at the university. Was it an oversight to not self-identify as a Scholar nominee on the U.Va. application, or is the correlation between nomination and acceptance just due to the fact that JS nominees tend to have strong credentials? Thanks.

When students document their mid year grades, there is a section there to add anything that you want to. I added that I had won a substantial merit scholarship from a big southern university/Honors program and another Honors designation from an Ivy, among a few other things.
Obviously I was accepted to UVA, and I'm here now! In that little window, where you can write anything you want to, I wrote that despite these very nice offers from other institutions, UVA was/still is at the top! Everyone wants to be loved. I told UVA why I still wanted them, despite the nice merit offers I had been offered elsewhere.

I didn't list it on my application, I was kind of afraid it'd come off as pretentious. Plus admissions isn't really connected to the organization anyway.

But I'm wondering if I should have, too -I don't want to give up any possible advantage in getting into somewhere I'd really like to go.

powderpuff - thanks for the information. gadad, if the Jefferson interview goes okay, I'll probably mention the scholarship process with the midyear report as exposing me to UVa and gaining interest.

Without it, I wouldn't have found out about the school.

I don't know if it'd help your daughter, but putting it in there certainly can't hurt.

Powderpuff - How does the applicant document mid-year grades? I can't find a mid-year report form among the downloads on the Admissions site.

Students log into their online application account to submit mid-year grades.

Great - I'll mention it to her and be sure she knows. Thanks.

I listed the nomination on my application. It can't hurt and certainly isn't worse than the crap most people pad their applications with. Schools get at most one nomination, so it's a nice indication of your teachers' and counselors' judgement of your accomplishments relative to those of your peers.
