jeff scholar program: how well knon is it

My son goes to an elite magnent school with merit based admission. However, it's not currently in the jeff scholar program, and is not eligible to send a nominee. Nobody at school seems to know about this program.

i stumbled upon it when I was trolling on the web. I contacted the foundation, and they told me that if the school contacts them, they will put the school in the "eligible" pool to send a nominee this fall. we will work with the school so that it happens.

My question is: how well known and prestigious is the jeff scholar program? I read posts saying that just being nominated is tremendous honor. Do college admission officers in highly selective colleges see it that way also?

Even if he is not selected as a jeff scholar in april next year, is the fact that he was his school's nominee going to count for something on the application package to be submitted by the end of the year to other selective colleges?

thanks in advance for your kind feedback.

The Jeff scholars I know, and those I know who did not get a scholarship but were nominated, were all very grateful for the opportunity. It is worth pursuing. Being the nominee looks very good on an application, though the selection is not finalized until the end of March. Regional selections are made at the end of january, though, so it is possible to send that info on to schools if you advance to the Finalists Weekend.

I can only speak to how well known it is around grounds. Being a Jeff Scholar means a lot to a UVa student and warrants a significant amount of respect/appreciation for the student's capabilities. The Jeff Scholar's I've known have been some of the most amazing and brilliant people I've ever met.
