Dean's Honor Scholarship @ Tulane

Yeah, I understand what you mean, but it is actually rather like admissions and yield. They know about how many students will accept their offer, or conversely turn down their offer even with the scholarship, so it is really built in to the equation. If they were to do what you said, they would reduce the number of scholarships, most likely, so that the same number were awarded in the end. Budgets are budgets, after all.

I suppose one could also make the argument that it somewhat diminishes the scholarship and the competition if they just keep moving down the list. Once one has decided the top 75, you really have to say that is it. Otherwise it seems not quite right. But the main thing i the first reason, no matter what one thinks of this second argument.

LOL FC-- you respond so quickly! I was going to say the same thing. They give out a certain number with an eye on yield. And I agree. This is not a scholarship that has a “waiting list”. You are either offered or not. It would water down the specialness of it (IMO) if they went down a waitlist of “runner-ups”. That doesn’t sound quite how I mean it, but hopefully you get the gist.

Does anyone know how many accepted the DHS last year?

This has been posted on several threads here-- FC probably knows the exact numbers-- but IIRC, 75 were offered and roughly half accept. My s’s year 100 were offered and about 40+ (I forget exactly) accepted. They aim for about 50% acceptance.

I don’t remember the exact number either, but jym is correct. It traditionally runs about 50%. My D’s year was the first they offered 75 instead of 100 and there were about 34 that came to Tulane, I think. The number was similar last year, from what I heard. Anyway, you get the general idea.

I didnt want to start a whole new thread with my question so I thought I would ask it here. Is there any info on when the Community Service Scholarships are awarded? Also, is this strictly based on community service or do they also consider acedemic acheivement?

Malami, I think my d heard about her CSS award around March 20 and it was based strictly on community service.

Vitrac, what did you do for your project/community service? I started the Interact Club at my school, teach Hindi to little kids with the India Association here and help organize their cultural events, volunteered at a hospital + an assisted living home (200ish hours) and I’ve read about all these people the started like their own charities. Should i even bother applying?

You should definitely apply! They look for a commitment to community service as well as leadership in that regard. Your record seems very solid to me and indicates both of these qualities. I would advise you to focus on one or two of the activities you listed and write about their meaning to you.

Agree with Vitrac. My s’s community service was referenced in the DHS award letter, but I don’t believe academic merit is directly related to the community service award. That said, if they have many strong candidates for the CSS, is it possible they would then also consider their academic performance? I think this is reasonable.

Well, of course I want to hear that acedemic achievement is taken into consideration because my daughters strengths lie there. If she was just an average Tulane applicant that excelled in the community service realm than I would want to hear that acedemics didnt matter for the Community Service award! LOL. Ok…Another question. When are the official Honors Weekend Dates? Do they overlap with the destination Tulane dates or are they completely seperate? When my daughter got her acceptance letter, they mentioned them but I dont know if actual dates were given. Of course I cant find the letter at this moment. Im sure its in the "very important spot-so I dont loose it-’ place that I assigned it. Just cant locate it at the moment.

I just re-read my post above and realized it sounded like I was saying that Tulane applicants are average. I meant an average applicant for Tulane, but of course a well above average student in general.

I don’t know when the weekends are (I went last year) but they are totally separate from destination Tulane.

Malami-Your d can combine a merit award with a CSS award and hit the jackpot!

@malami
The Honors weekends are March 20-21 (Sunday/Monday) and April 10-11 (Sunday/Monday). In both cases, there is a Destination Tulane date on the Tuesday following Honors weekend, so if you aren’t already on information overload, you could stay over one more day and go to both. It would give your S or D an opportunity to meet more incoming students, but it looks like some of the same information and opportunities covered over Honors Weekend from what I have read.

That indeed would be nice except her CS achievements are fairly average compared to some of the past winners. (Ive been looking at old posts.) Some of the kids had such amazing service and leadership and from what I could gather many of them didnt get any award. I think they only give out 30 so the competition is stiff. We sent the app in. It never hurts to try.

Thank you Kreativekat. Im going to start making plans to visit.

I applied to DHS and did an amazing project but I won’t get it because of lack of scores (only a 30 on the ACT). I mainly applied because I just wanted to show Valerie Timmers, the admissions counselor, how dedicated I am in hopes that it might increase my chances, even if only minute, for other scholarships, since I am from Louisiana and eligible for the maylor and legislative scholarships. The legislative scholarship is purely chosen by Louisiana legislatures but the mayoral scholarship is narrowed down to fifteen finalists by a (I think Tulane) committee before the mayor makes his decision. I also recreated my DHS project and submitted it to the mayoral scholarship as supplemental information.

I wish all of you luck! Do the same for me please! And, keep this thread going; it keeps me sane during this long waiting period :D.

I received the Dean’s Scholarship last year. I got a UPS packet on Feburary 23, 2010, notifying me. I knew they were sending them out because Tulane tweeted the night before about the packages, which they UPS overnight to every winner. For my project I had made a short film about how New Orleans is the “Hollywood of the South.” You must relate your project to The Box in order to be considered. A few of my other credentials were:

ACT:33
Several Varsity Sports
National Merit Commended Student
4.36 (inflated by 8 AP classes)
President of Latin Club
*I think it helps a lot to show an interest in the school and also in New Orleans. That’s what my personal statement was about.

That is good to know, rach, as my stats are almost exactly the same as yours (33, two sports, seven APs, 4.0 uw GPA, and president of a club here and there). You just made me much more optimistic about my chances! The only downside is my project was more focused on me, with one part about my community and how much I love Louisiana
