Diomedes - I also received the DHS last year. I wouldn’t worry about the project being more focused on you. After speaking to many other recipients, I found that the submitted projects were all so varied. While some focused on Tulane and New Orleans, some had nothing to do with either at all. I submitted a cooking video in which I told stories and gave little bits of information about myself. Within the video I inserted two commercial, one about NOLA and one about Tulane. These were my stats:

ACT: 34
SATII Bio: 790
GPA: 4.92
Rank: 3/419
9 APs
Various clubs and community service

Does anyone think it would be productive to send mid year transcripts to Tulane? In terms of further consideration for the DHS? My daughter is sending out mid year reports and transcripts to the other schools she has applied to as they are required. Her GPA has risen slightly to a 4.8 weighted and a 3.9 something unweighted. But she got a B in AP physics with a C on the midterm which is evident on the transcripts. It also might be too late. What does everyone think?

Hey, physics is tough! Sounds like it wouldn’t make much difference one way or the other since the change in her GPA is obviously minuscule (it didn’t have anywhere to go almost!). Personally I say send it as it shows she is taking a lot of AP’s, but again, I think it probably doesn’t change her “package” meaningfully.

i believe the general rule is to send mid-year grades to schools that don’t necessarily require them when the grades show performance at or above the student’s level at application time. i would not send scores that show any sort of decline unless i absolutely had to. same goes for anything with a C, but that is just my opinion.

my D sent her semester transcript to all of the schools she was still waiting to hear from regarding admission or scholarship consideration. she received a 4.0UW (school does not provide weighted GPS or rank) with 5 AP classes and felt that could only be looked upon favorably.

Thank you as always Fallenchemist. You wouldnt think the GPA had any place to go but the fact is, she is 15 in her class! And thats with something like 14 or 15 AP classes!

Thank you everyone who responed. I must have been writing my reply to Fallenchemist while you responded and didnt see the posts. I think I will leave well enough alone. The C on the midterm is jarring when looking at the rest of the transcript so they will definitly notice it. Rach54321 posted above about the notification on twitter that the DHS packages were being mailed. How does that work? Do you need to sign up? Im pretty slow when it comes to all this technology(my family got me an I phone several years ago and up until last week, the only thing I knew how to do(or cared to know how to do) was place a call and answer a call. After looking at the posts from previous years, when the packages were mailed and all the confusion and angst, it would be nice to avoid all that.

When they went out last year, I spent the majority of the day reading posts of all the others who received their notification. At around 6:00 pm I gave up hope and was on my way to the gym. As I was pulling out of my garage, the UPS truck stopped at the end of the driveway and came to the car with mine. Like I said twitter may help with delivery dates, but certainly not the angst. :)

Thanks gabby1116! When I refered to the angst I think I was reacting to the posts of the previous years, when people were waiting and waiting to hear when in actuality the decisions had been made and mailed out long before. Of course all of that could have been avoided if they sent out letters uniformly one way or the other. Many of the students work really hard on the projects and deserve a decision even if its negative. My daughter and I were on the chat last evening and I cant begin to tell you how many people asked when the decisions would be made for the DHS and Community Service Scholarship. Some people asked how you would know if they even recieved the scholarship app and project. The fact that there is no specific date of notification also adds to the confusion. Basicly the answers were "late Feb. and I think at least one time one of the counselors said early March. They also said 1000 applied for it (the DHS) and “50-75 are awarded.” That is inconsistant with the information that my daughter received from the school. So… all that said, if twitter alerts us that the packages were mailed, it will only be a matter of a day or two of stalking the UPS guy.

Okay, I’m a little bit confused and perhaps you have already mentioned this but do you only receive the UPS package if you have gotten the DHS? Do you get any noticification that you didn’t receive the scholarship?

I believe last year they finally started telling people that did not get it. I don’t think that is by UPS though, probably was by regular mail. Prior to that they didn’t even tell those that did not get it, which many of us complained was just not right. I guess they heard us and changed the policy. Hopefully that will still be the case.

An admissions counselor told me through email that everyone will receive a letter regarding the status of their Dean’s Honor Scholarship application.

Im glad to hear it. Im still going to try to hook into “twitters” so we will know when the packages are being mailed. (hopefully they will anounce it that way again this year.

malaml - I might be mistaken because I don’t tweet myself, but I think what gabby was saying was that a group of people that had applied for the DHS were tweeting, and so when some started getting their packages they posted the tweets. I don’t think Tulane itself is tweeting. Is that right, gabby?

I don’t tweet either but Tulane Admissions does. This is from twitter.com “Get short, timely messages from Tulane Admission. Twitter is a rich source of instantly updated information. It’s easy to stay updated on an incredibly wide variety of topics. Join today and follow @TulaneAdmission.”
