My son just got an email today telling him he had been selected to be a Dean's Scholar. Is there some particular benefit to this or is it yet another feel-good title? He just came back from two days visiting Brown University and seems to be sold on Brown, although nothing has been finalized yet.

Yeah, I got it, too. It seems like a legitimate program were students are basically chosen to be student advisors to the dean and staff. I think it’s a pretty cool opportunity to build personal relationships with professors and the like, as well as to have a leadership role in the department and participate in special activities. By my calculations, somewhere 10% and 15% of all engineering students are dean’s scholars.

^ I think there are 42 freshmen currently on the list. Is the engineering department really that small?

Yes. My son got it and wondering about the same thing. Good to know that they will get some leadership opportunities.

The engineering school has about 300-350 freshmen each year. Probably half of them are in biomedical or industrial engineering.
