Dean's Scholarship Information

hi… My daughter is a junior and interested in IU. We have yet to visit as we live in VA and she is interested in primarily OOS schools. She is really intrigued by Indiana. Indiana may be the only one that could potentially offer any scholarship money. I cannot find anywhere on their website where they outline the general criteria for Deans Scholarship and levels. If anyone can provide that information or share anecdotally that would be helpful. She hasn’t taken the SAT yet but her high school is very rigorous, her weighted GPA should be around 4.0 and her AP or DE number will be 6 or 7. I was hoping she may get some money depending on how she does on the SAT.

Award notification for IU Academic Scholarships will be included in the #IUSaidYes crimson envelopes mailed by the IU Office of Admissions. I couldn’t find the criteria either. Some recipients are then. invited to apply for selective scholarships and these are always a supplement to the Deans and Provost awards. Some of the criteria under SSA is SAT 1400 or ACT 31. GPA 3.85 for consideration to scholar programs.

The Dean’s scholarship is anywhere between $1,000 and $11,000 per year. It’s hard to say for sure without an SAT score, but a strong SAT score combined with her current GPA would give her a good chance to be at the top of that range. However, IU will still be very expensive even if she gets the max Dean’s scholarship as other scholarship opportunities are fairly limited.

What do you need your net costs to be?

In another thread, you mention Penn State . That’s a school that’s lousy with merit…expect to be full pay there.

How did your daughter do on the PSAT?

I know Penn State will not offer any merit aid. IU is about the only school she is looking at that will at least within striking distance of her scores. My daughter’s PSAT is 1210 and she is taking a prep class for the SAT. So not sure how much of a jump to expect and if she takes multiple times etc.

I have a question - why would a student who is invited to submit an SSA not also be considered for one of the academic scholarships. Does that mean it’s very likely that she will get at least something out of the SSA? It all seems so confusing to me. Also looking forward to hearing from Jacobs admissions about their scholarships. Can’t make any decisions until it’s all in!

@4kidzmom I take it that you have an student who was not offered a Dean’s Scholarship (if OOS) or Provost’s Scholarship (if instate) at the time of admission, but was invited to complete the SSA. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, IU does not publicly disclose the test scores/GPA needed for the Dean’s Scholarship (in various amounts), the Provost’s Scholarship (in various amounts), or an SSA invite. If you look through the various discussions here over the past few years, you can begin to piece together some of this information, but it remains somewhat speculative. I supposed I agree with your surprise, because I would have thought those merit scholarships would have been easier (or about the same) to obtain than the SSA invite, but that is just speculation. I would not take that to mean, however, that an SSA award is more likely now. I suppose it could not hurt to make a call and chat with someone just to have peace of mind that there wasn’t an oversight on those merit scholarships. (There are a few other scholarship programs that I am not addressing here because they are either significantly more selective and/or targeted to certain groups such as URMs. I also know nothing about Jacobs, or any major specific awards.)

@Altmusicman ty for taking the time to reply. You summed it up quite well. My son’s scores and Gpa are pretty high (4.3 and 33, 35 if they superscore). He was offered honors college. 60% of Jacobs’ students get some sort of scholarship… thing is, he cannot go to IU unless they match our flagship state school - the music school is as strong as Jacobs - so it has to be a wash or it doesn’t make sense…

Thanks again!

I am surprised that a 4.3/33 didn’t warrant any Dean’s scholarship. I understand they range from $1K-$11K/year, with the higher amounts believed to be largely tied to GPA/scores. Maybe others can weigh in with their own experiences. If I were you, as uncomfortable as it might be, I would probably place a call and make a gentle inquiry.

With those scores, there’s no way your son didn’t receive some type of scholarship. There has to be some type of mixup. I’d make a call if I were you.

@4kidzmom Did he apply after November 1? November 1 is the priority scholarship deadline. Students who apply after November 1 have very limited scholarship opportunities.

He got it in before 11/1!

@4kidzmom I would call the office of scholarships. There is no way he didn’t get anything from Dean’s/Provost’s with those stats if everything was in before 11/1.

I agree, @iubaccounting, I’ll call tomorrow. Maybe it’s because he applied to Jacobs. Still odd though.

@iubaccounting, as I suspected, it’s because he is a Jacobs applicant. They do their own…

@4kidzmom Interesting. I didn’t know that.

@4kidzmom I was thinking about that as well. I applied to Jacobs, and have a 36 ACT/ 4.3 weighted GPA, and wasn’t offered anything with my academic acceptance. I’m glad to hear that I didn’t miss anything on my application.
