I was just wondering how many people listen to death metal? I have been into death metal since I started playing guitar a few years ago. I am a senior right now, and I only know a few people in my school who enjoy the same music as me. Some of my favorite bands include Death (ofc), Anata, Decrepit Birth, Necrophagist, Dying Fetus, Morbid Angel, Skinless (hence the name The Optimist), Origin, Cannibal Corpse, Bolt Thrower, etc. I also enjoy some black/folk metal like Burzum, Ensiferum, Agalloch, Einherjer, Emperor, Fimbulwinter, etc.

I am applying to UVA, UW-Seattle, UIUC, Indiana-Bloomington, UT-Austin, and PSU. Anyone know whether I can find people to jam with at these schools?

I know its kind of redundant to ask this considering I have another post dealing with pretty much the same things, but it doesn't hurt to ask :)

There definitely will be people to jam with at all of those schools. There probably won't be a lot due to the fact that a lot of people don't listen to death metal to begin with (compared to other genres). I never really liked the kind of metal you listed, I was more about the melodic stuff. My favorite metal band is In Flames minus their newest album which is pretty much nu metal. I stopped listening to metal a while ago though, people's music preferences often change once they go to college.

Well since I play guitar (and also keyboard, violin, and tabla) I enjoy classical instrumental and techno (l0l)

I love death metal because it pushes the instrument to its limits. I was never really into any other genres of music. The only genres I am into are classical, death metal, black metal, and some techno.

Death metal isn't really depressing... If you listen to it when you are depressed it will beat the depression out of you with its brutal riffs and double bass.

Listen to some songs by bands like Decrepit Birth, Necrophagist, or Anata.

Death metal is probably one of the least depressing genres of music.

I like Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, Lamb of God, Dark Tranquillity, Children of Bodom, Death Angel, Immortal, In Flames, Dimmu Borgir, Nevermore....ah..too much to list.

Random, but the other day in my 20th Century Russia history class, our prof played Iron Maiden's "Mother Russia" to the class.

This is a great list. Although it's not really death metal, and more symphonic, I would like to also suggest listening to more symphonic stuff, like Avantasia, Rhapsody, Symphony X.

Personally, I like thrashy stuff more, like Slayer, Exodus, Anthrax (do they count?), and some Anubis Gate. There's also some good progressive metal out there too.

Honestly, I don't get why people don't like metal so much. The bands have actual musical talent, it sounds good, and is good for doing both focused work, or relaxing.

Would you rather that I listen to Lil Jon rhyming [female dog] with [female dog]?

Oh wait, I see you like Man U. Very original. Just stick with your top 40 garbage.

the correlation rate between people who listen to metal and people who don't get laid, wear too much black clothing, and have greasy long hair is like .999

but maybe youll grow out of your angsty adolescent phase eventually.

Some of the voices can definitely be tough to hear the first few times, but it's an acquired taste I guess.

While I am open to all types of music, I just like metal the most. I started this thread to see whether other people like metal. If you hate metal, you are more than welcome to say that you hate it. However, please give a reasoned answer, and not something similar to what CaseSpartan10 wrote.

Slayer is good too. Their songs are fast and their lyrical material is complex and interesting. Slayer and other thrash bands were actually a major influence for many evolving death metal bands.
