Hey, I just bought royal hunt’s Paradox II! I haven’t gotten around to opening it yet. I’m listening to mastodon’s Crack the Skye (came out 5 days ago). PRR went completely pop/electro with their latest album. No prog whatsoever, and that’s what got me into them in the first place. Sad, really. I was looking forward to that album for the longest time. And you are the first person I’ve met who’s heard of both alcest and PRR. Kudos to you :)

I heard PT is going back in studio… Next album (possibly) by the end of this year.

Isnt art of life X Japan’s epic? I’ve listened it once before, and haven’t gone back to it since. It didn’t click with me. I might check it out again though.

I would definately recommend checking out heavier prog (aka progressive death). It takes FOREVER to get into if you aren’t already into death metal, but trust me, it’s worth it (not to mention my favorite genre)…

Cynic - Focus
Unexpect - In a Flesh Aquarium
The Old Dead Tree - THe Nameless Disease
Obsidian - Emerging
Gojira - From Mars to Sirius
Atheist - Elements / Unquestionable Presence
Opeth - Deliverance <– masterpiece

i haven’t really listened to royal hunt in a while so i’m unfamiliar with their latest album at this point but i’ll get around to it soon i think. yeah, i was excited for a new album after i listened to the dark third, that’s pretty disappointing news. haha, well, i think i can say the same for you!

yep, PT is recording now, think they started last month. supposed to be some sort of tour toward the end of the year but we’ll see. i missed them here last april and was pretty ****ed so i definitely want to make sure i’m there this time.

i suppose it’s their epic, yeah, 30-odd minutes. it’s an amazing song except for one extended part in the middle that’s from what i can tell mindless banging on a piano, mildly interesting but mostly irritating. have you heard malice mizer’s “merveilles” (or any malice mizer really)?

i like death metal sometimes, growling is hit or miss with me. i have opeth’s discography and it’s definitely solid, but yeah, it did take me a while to fully appreciate. i kinda like katatonia, and i really like amorphis. i’ll make a note of those bands/albums though. slowly but surely i will work through all of the music i have to listen to!

Cool… If you’re anything like me, it’ll take some time to get through those lists. I go through new music VERY slowly -I listen to each new album (I only listen to albums, not individual songs) at least 5 times to let it sink in before moving onto the next album (a necessity when you’re into DM). Which is why I haven’t opened Paradox II yet. And feel free to recommend any music; you probably have a good sense of what I like!

I haven’t heard of malice mizer at all. I’ll look into it.

Early Katatonia is terrific (before they abandoned growls entirely). I still think brave murder day is their magnum opus. I can’t listen to their newer stuff. For some straight death metal (since that’s what this thread is about :P), check out death’s Symbolic or suffocation’s Effigy of the Forgotten.

Just wondering. Why is it called “Death” Metal? The name itself isn’t so appealing. Plus the names of all these bands?! It’s very disturbing in a sense…

well its not really disturbing… there are far more disturbing things in life which you probably never want to experience first hand.

I really don’t know where the term comes from, but probably from Death. It was a very influential band that contributed to the death metal movement.

I guess I’ve been exposed to the wrong type of metal. What I heard from ‘In Flames’ just now (myspace) wasn’t that bad… I almost understood what they were saying.

Kids at my high school were listening to metal bands like ‘Darkthrone’ and ‘Crimsom Magnum.’ Terrible, terrible stuff, imo.

In Flames is pretty good melo death, however I have lost most of my interest for them.

Darkthrone is black metal. Its on the more “INSANE” side of metal. Black metal is pretty stupid in my opinion.

Not all death metal is like “KILL PEOPLE EAT THEM RAWR.” There are some very sensible bands out there. The only one I can think of which would appeal to a wide variety of audiences would be Quo Vadis. Awesome Canadian tech/prog band whose lyrics deal with topics concerning life, philosophy, etc.

I’m not too big into death these days (and I really never liked tech/brutal death), but I’ll still enjoy me some Opeth, older In Flames, At the Gates, etc.

What I really love, to this day, is doom metal. And post-metal, obviously. The very meaning of life is held within each Cult of Luna song

/swoon.

edit: I’ve mostly been listening to twee lately though, so my opinion may be invalid. I haven’t renewed my metal head card in about a year.
