Well the Andover invitational results are in. Hotchkiss came out as the top school and had the 2nd and fourth placed speakers. GO HOTCHKISS ! Unfortunately Young Kafka has not been debating this year because he has been doing other things but he will continue latter this year.

Well let us wait and see what happens at Worlds, that is the most important tournament after all.

What schools are the 1st and 3rd from? Do you have a list of the top 3 schools? Also, who gets to go to the world tournament, the top 3 speakers?

Not necessarily, 3 Hotchkiss debaters (the max allowed for one school) already qualified for worlds before the Andvoer meeting. So i would assume that the Andover guy should have placed earlier unless he could not win any tournaments earlier than now which is pretty late in the season. I would be inclined to think that he got his place earlier but i could be wrong. I will check and put up the actual results as soon as I can.

Ok i asked around. You are right the top speaker was from Andover - surprisingly. Also we had the top teams in Advanced - not sure about novice. No team for Andover placed in the top 3 for advanced or novice. The advanced speaker order was : andover Hotchkiss choate Hotchkiss Ii think i got that correct. It seems Choate will be Hotchkiss’ biggst rival this year. No matter, we will retain our dominance ! I was also wrong about this being late in the season. I have been out of the game for a while so that’s probably why i got confused.

Why don’t you guys compete in the National Forensic League (NFL)? I can almost guarantee that it’s far more competitive and intellectually stimulating.

We would but most prep schools have school and sports on Saturdays and that takes precedence over debate so it would be impossible for us to attend both. That being said, the Hotchkiss debate team does go to internationals that has people competing at worlds every single year (it always send the max allowed 3 people). It is consistently the top American school at Worlds for as long as anyone can remember. Our debaters have also claimed the best impromptu debater title every year for the past 4 years i believe. We also go to Canada for the Mcgill debate meet. It would be great if we could do the NFL but scheduling conflicts keep us out But if we did … ha ha just kidding. Go HOTCHKISS !

Never heard of this world competition, and I was the 2nd place finisher in a debate event at the '09 NFL Grand National Tournament. You guys should try coming once, so you can witness real skill. :D

I’m only kidding. I’m sure the Hotchkiss – and other prep school – debaters are fantastic, but I’d love the opportunity to compete against them.

Results are results. Can’t dispute that. Congrats SPS. Hotchkiss did have the top two advanced speakers though. And so that’s just another Hotchkiss person going to Worlds.

The funny thing is that Hotchkiss only does decently at McGill (even compared to Canadian public schools) and American teams never do well at worlds.

illuminar, your wrong about that. First of all do not deride the Canadian public schools. The Canadians are consistently the best of the best. when the hotchkiss team went to Mcgill when i was with the team we placed within the top 4. Our school had one kid who placed 8th and another who placed second out of some 300 debaters. . So we did well but I will admit they are superb. Public school kids are not any dumber than prep school kids. Your arrogance in that regard is somewhat unsettling. Don’t assume you are superior simply because you have the prep school stamp of approval. I would rather debate along side some kid from the Canadian public schools you so easily deride than a kid from Andover and Exeter. Why ? because they are better. Period. Their results at worlds speak for themselves. Just because you go to Harvard or Penn that does not mean you are a better debater than a kid from U toronto.

So there you have it, you are obviously talking nonsense. All the Hotchkiss debaters know that the Canadians are our toughest competition. FAR harder than our danies opponents. We have never won up in Canada but we dominate at Worlds (among he Americans) and at internationals. We dominate worlds impromptu debate amongst everyone - we were number 1 for 3 years running. Our coach is Canadian which is why we do so well. The Canadians are master debaters and have consistently taken the top 3 spots at Worlds every year.

As for Hotckiss not doing well at Worlds … you pulled that out of you a very dark place. As I said, Hotchkiss has had the top impromptu debater at worlds for three years in a row … if you do not call that domination i don’t know what you can call domination. Hotchkiss is always the top American school at worlds for as long as anyone can remember. Hotchkiss generally is the 5th school overall at worlds (with the top 4 spots consistently being taken by the Canadians you so quickly deride and slight). And just last year Hotchkiss had the second placed speaker at worlds over all and two in the top 10. The top American speaker is almost always from Hotchkiss – i cannot remember a time when that was not the case. And this is year after year after year. So get your facts straight. And listen to fif, stop hating on Hotchkiss.

And have some respect for the Canadians. If you were really into debate you would know just how menacing they are. They are lions. They are godly debating machines. When God created the world he said “there shall be debaters” and as a result the Canadian people were born.

Look at the college results for debate as well, the Canadians always do very well as do the English. You’ll see what I mean.

Firstly, I found that there are several mistakes and biased claims in this thread. To clear things up:

At the Andover Invitational an advanced speaker from Andover placed FIRST making them eligible for the World’s competition. They were NOT the first speaker from Andover to qualify. During the summer at International’s another speaker qualified.

Secondly at the Hotchkiss Invitational, Andover placed 2nd overall, won the extemporaneous speaking competition, and had 3rd best advanced pair, 1st best novice speaker, and 1st best novice team. It is also worth noting that Hotckiss chooses to tabulate the winning school by percentage of wins–regardless of the number of teams entered. Andover, overall, had the greatest number of wins but because they entered a greater number of teams the percentage was 2% lower than that of St. Pauls.

I hope this clears up any of the misconceptions presented earlier in the thread. Also, for kafka why, exactly, do you consider students educated a prep school so much more inferior to Canadian public schools?

guamanpoma, I assume both you and kafka are deeply involved in the debate in your school. Can you please answer some of my “technical” questions about debate?
How many students can be selected to enter the World’s competion each year? Is there a quota for a school, the area, or the country?
How many and what are the chances each year a debater can try and be eligible to enter the World’s?
Are there other prominent debate contests other than the World’s?
Is the full list of awards from both Andover Invitational and Hotchkiss Invitational posted somewhere on the web?
Thanks.

12 students make the US team, although that number may have increased this year. The usual method of qualifying is by obtaining the top advanced speaker award at a DANIES tournament, although one can qualify through Internationals as well.

Since the US team is selected exclusively from New England prep schools, it’s actually fairly straightforward to qualify for World’s. The qualifying tournaments are listed here: [Debating Association of New England Independent Schools](http://www.daneis.org/calendar.htm)

The most prestigious debate tournament in America is the TOC, held at the University of Kentucky in the spring, and where the national championships are held for Policy and LD debate.

I’d try the link I posted above. Best of luck!
