December 11 SSAT

my polar bear is sponsored by my underwater boxing coach

otherwise yes, i believe that the cost would be astronomical

edit: ok i’m getting terribly off-topic
the moral here is not to underestimate reading comp (as i did this time…), because when i took the ssat 2 years ago, it was a piece of cake. obviously it can be a lot harder than you’d expect, as this experience unfortunately proved

@DiveAlive: I didn’t mean to cause any anxiety! Don’t stress. Just get those essays and apps done.

oh, no worries 7D  i knew i flunked that part anyway, haha. maybe if i write amazing essays… i’ll get right on it!

Took the test yesterday! I am pretty much shocked at all the people… At least 500 people were there :0 (COMPETITION PEOPLE!)I thought the essay was OK. Math was super easy, I wouldn’t be surprised if I got 800… But the reading and vocab? Pretty much doubtful. When I got to the last reading passage, I partially blanked out. Not good… I read the paragraph almost three times, but I couldn’t get the information into my head! UGH. The longest 40 minutes of my life! I guessed on a couple and omitted three, I think? FAAAAIIIL. From what I’ve heard, reading is the least unforgiving. I heard someone say that you shouldn’t even think of getting into Andover without a 2300… Again, that’s where competition begins.

Did anybody get the reading comprehension passage where it began with two short poems? I’m usually good with poetry, but those two poems were just… I think I got all of the questions wrong with that passage. FAIL.

I agree with what all of you said… Reading comprehension was crazy hard, vocab not so great, math super easy. But if you’re an eighth grader applying for ninth, think of it this way: People in 11th grade took the exact same test, and they’re three grades ahead of you! So don’t worry, most likely all of the eighth graders who took the test were crazy about the reading & verbal section.

heps1996-I had the same vocab words… God I didn’t know a lot of them! :stuck_out_tongue: I guess I should have studied more roots. Although I do remember I chose forceful for emphatic. There was a word that started with ‘ANT’ I think? I left that blank. I also got “sprinkle is to drops as…” I was freaking out on that one. I chose bloom is to flowers. I think I got that wrong. FAIL. Oh and there was one with ‘religion’ in it with ‘cosmopolitan’. Anybody remember that one? I regret that one so much. I actually randomly chose economy, but now that I look back, I think it was culture? Correct me if I’m wrong. Was the first one canoe to river? Which one did you choose for that one?

DiveAlive-Yes, yes, yes! I didn’t know what atonement meant. Ugh. I got the word dauber in the analogies section too, and I think I skipped that one because I didn’t know two out of the three words given.

It was rather unfortunate for me, because there was a fifth grader who sat by me. He was extremely annoying-talking to himself, scratching the table with his ruler, spinning his ruler around his pencil, getting up, moving his chair, and the worst part? He started to countdown during the last minute of each section. That was really frustrating because I still had five questions left during the last minute of the reading section, and I would’ve got them right, if he hadn’t started the countdown, that is. Ugh.

How was everybody’s essay? I think I got a bit off topic. Sigh.

Don’t worry people! The suspense is killing pretty much everyone! Look at the bright side, we’re all done with the SSAT’s, aren’t we? :D

i think the religion to cosmopolitan was culture-- i’m pretty sure of that one. and the first one was canoe to river, i’m certain of that. i studied crazy hard for analogies, i think i did pretty well on that section.

oh my goodness there were 3 kids who were like bestest friends who chose to sit next to each other, even after the proctor said not to sit with people you know (they just giggled)… they were like, kicking the table and whispering (the proctor just glared at them… 2 minutes later, it happens again). it kind of ticked me off but it was alright

oh and yes the poetry reading section… let’s not even go there. does anyone remember that question about like, if line 8 meant a step, or postponing the discussion of great poems, or that it was pointless to discuss the characteristics of a poem… i spent like 10 minutes on that question, and still inconclusive… i guessed.
& all those questions, where do you think this passage came from/what do you think the author will write about next? i don’t know, isn’t that a subjective question?! :(

i cannot wait to get my results back (ok, kinda dread)!!

ok. math i mad an 800. no doubt. i didn’t think the reading was super hard. i omited 1 and probably missed like 3-5 others. on vocab i omited 9, but im pretty sure i got almost all the others rights. so im scared but i still think i did well…

DiveAlive-Gosh I’m troubled in the same places as you. The first problem was canoe to river, do you remember your answer for that one? Was it train to track? If I got that wrong, then I will freak out. I know right, for the poetry section I literally sat there for five minutes not knowing what to choose. I forget, did I omit the ‘step’ question? I tried to eliminate the answers that didn’t make sense, but somehow all of them didn’t! Which one did you guess? I remember that I did omit the first two questions that asked me what the first two poems were about. I blanked out on that. Couldn’t get anything into my head. Does anybody remember the answer? That would help me a lot. I absolutely dread getting my results back.

IN CONCLUSION- WE ALL KNOW THAT THE READING SECTION WAS SUPER HARD

And guys- Don’t panic! The SSAT is definitely NOT going to decide it all. Although a 99% does makes a difference from a 79%, there’s always hope! There are still the applications, interviews, and recommendations that are going to make up for it! People with percentiles in the 70’s can even get into the top boarding schools, so don’t worry. With all our hard work,we’ll all get somewhere someday! Trust me, all of our effort is not a waste.

math was easy for me, i never really practiced it so i don’t know if it was easy compared to other tests…

reading comprehension was really hard. i hated the poems =( i think i omitted 3 questions… but i also guessed a ton.

vocabulary wasn’t extremely hard compared to the practice tests i’ve taken, but my vocabulary still isn’t very good… i omitted 4 of them, and guessed a lot XD

there were sooo many chinese students taking the test… anyways i hope i don’t get a really bad score. but i’ve already scheduled for another test in january.

DiveAlive. The one about the poetry being the steps, I put that he would postpone the discussion of great poems until later, although I’m completely unsure about it.

For the poetry about the mask, did anybody understand that question that asked what was “a long mile?” I put he has suffered greatly, and I spent like 5 minutes debating internally. Ugh.

Also, the essay kinda messed me up. I used the same literature book for my two examples, which was all I managed to get in. >:O

uh oh, i’m hearing a few people talking about trick questions in the math section… and if i found the math section easy, perhaps i fell into those traps…

one of the trick questions may have been the one where you had to find an average? i don’t really remember though, i think the trick answer was something like 3-point-something

does anyone else remember any questions from the math section that were trick questions? i just want to make sure =/

lost1nth3music-I think I omitted the steps one? I didn’t know which one to choose. For the mile one… I skipped it too. I was completely unsure. I was cursing under my breath…It was really hard to choose!

great…if there were trick questions in the math I probably fell for every single one of them. ugh.

For me, math and vocab were pretty easy, but wow, reading was ridiculous. Now im totally stressing out that when i get my scores, ill get a 60 on reading and it will just make me seem very unbalanced. what makes it worse is that reading is super harsh. you miss one, and your down to a 97.

trick question: the guests to parties

they said that the difficulty of the test is taken into consideration when working out percentiles.

I though reading section was the hardest. The poems were honestly really difficult! haha Math was pretty easy, especially the last section. Verbal wasn’t that bad:) Analogies were actually one of the hardest part of verbal section.
The essay page was so small haha, first I thought I will not fit my whole essay in there, but I did somehow.
I can’t wait until scores come out! :)) When will they by the way? :D

next week tuesday or wednesday

LOLOL @DiveAlive

Are you sure you didn’t see me there? I was with two of my friends and our proctor said not to sit with someone we knew. We giggled and sat together anyway haha. We didn’t kick the table though.

@ jerryeps:
hahaha well, looking back at your previous posts, it says you’re canadian + from the west coast, so … LOL maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t. were you with a girl who was wearing a hoodie and uggs, as well as another boy?

@ lostinthemusic:
i wrote that he would postpone it too (for the poetry steps question)! & i wrote that he suffered greatly (for the long mile one), as well. phew… well, that doesn’t mean we’re right but i take comfort in numbers, so hah  what did you (or anyone else) write for the one about scientists and weird experiments/majors- where do you think this excerpt was taken from? i chose essay, but maybe it was scientist’s diary or an editorial… gah idk :(

@ angela2010: i wrote train to track, yep. & i’m sure of that one because all of the other options were stupid (yay analogies)

@ snapepotter: are you sure it’s next tuesday/wed? the website says the 29th (which is next next wednesday), unless you chose online report (which i wish i picked)

& where did you hear that they’d take difficulty into consideration? i’ve never heard that before, LOL … and its a standardized test, how exactly would that work :S
