December 2014 ACT Discussion Thread

I know for a fact that there have been multiple tests where -2 is still a 36

Yeah i thought the same thing about math… way easier than october

I think I got like a 36 or something lol idk not too bad

Yea I’m fairly confident that I got a 36 on math. I think at least 33 on English. Maybe 33-34 on science(depending on curve) and a 33-34 on reading(depending on curve).

I’m fairly confident about everything but math lol

this was my first act test. it felt a lot more rushed and a lot harder than when I practiced. is this feeling normal? do I have a chance at getting the scores I got on practice tests?

this was my first test and i felt the same way

^ ditto

What do you guys think a -6 in math will be?

@gminor 29 or 30

I’m still laughing about the fact that I used the acronym “YOLO” as support in my essay.

Really hoping for a 34… If I don’t get it, I will take it again in January.

You guys a one point difference in your score will not make or break your college app, don’t stress too much :)

A friend of mine just got into Harvard with a 30

@Aaly222 he or she must have insane extracurriculars

@Aaly222‌ It’s actually very possible. They’re not always looking for a student who maxed out the ACT and has a 4.0 GPA.

@Dr3wwwww Not necessarily true. The “I need a bunch of extra-curricular activities and 1,000 community service hours” attitude is largely unsuccessful. All of your (maybe one or two) activities should be deep as opposed to superficial. Community service is actually useful when you can tie it into something; for example, if you want to move into education for a career you may discuss how you love helping people succeed.
Colleges are well aware that some people are mediocre test-takers under extreme, cruel ACT-like time pressure. If I had to guess that student already had a clear goal set out and had made moderate to substantial efforts while in high school to achieve those goals.

@Dr3wwwwww Nah, he just tried his best in everything he could do.

@JustEmily I’m confused, that is exactly what I was saying.

@ShaneBlakeEy you are wrong. -6 on this math we’ll probably get you a 33-32. This is similar to the September one where missing~20 can get you a 26…
