The first decile for my class on the school profile reads 95-101.63. However, I have a 100.4 gpa but am second in my class, only behind number one with the 101.63. Will this hurt my chances of getting into college? (because I heard that admission officers compare your gpa to the gpa of your peers)
Yes they compare to gpa of your peers and you are in the top decile so you are one of the top kids. They will also look at the SAT scores for that group, if all applied to same college that will make a difference too. Maybe they will prefer the number 8 kid because his SAT is high and his letters of recommendation are better because he is an asset in class and helps others.
I suggest that you worry about yourself and putting together the best application that you can rather than worrying about every little detail about college admissions, most of which you can’t do anything about.
Are you kidding? You’re #2 in your class and wondering if that hurts you? Your peers are all the students in your class, not just the #1 person. Please, breathe…
If number one became ill and had to drop out, you’d be the new number one. I’m pretty sure admissions committees are mature enough to rationally consider this small difference.
