Decision dates

You have great stats. You are humble to be humbled. Congrats to you. You deserve it. :)

Wow, congratulations on the early writes. I never knew they existed until a couple weeks ago. :)

^I wish I didn’t know they exist… only makes me more paranoid :-P

But congratulations to everyone who got an early write. That’s awesome. :)

Same here. I wish I didn’t know LL’s and EW’s existed. Although I know getting one is super rare, I still keep hoping for it everyday.

I noticed that people are saying what the ACT score is superscored. Does Amherst superscore?

^ Yes. (10char)

@ nirvana
Congrats fellow canuck! lol…when was your letter dated btw? I didn’t know Amherst did the EW/LL, and now this just made even more anxious, but hey theres still hope =P

^ The letter was dated March 1st on mine. I’m sure you still have an equally good chance =]

When do international students receive their decision email? Is it 26th?

I went to Divoh and got a letter! I didn’t check to see when it was dated, but I know I got it in last Wednesday. I didn’t really look through the whole thread very thoroughly, but did we determine whether or not the earlier notification is for top applicants yet? Also, has anyone gotten a financial aid package yet? I wanted to compare aid (not numbers, just relatively) to see what it’s like.

Yes, I got the fin. aid package online yesterday.
It was exactly as the calculator calculated.

See, I am rather confused because my package is about $6K more than my FAFSA EFC. Does Amherst not give 100% of need? That was the impression that I got… Should I contact the financial aid office to complain/ask/barter?

Amherst also uses financial information from the CSS Profile, not just the FAFSA EFC. The Profile can generate a higher expected contribution for a number of reasons. These often have to do with the valuation assets (not the same as the FAFSA formula) or a non-custodial parent, or some other resource they consider as available to the student.

It is very common for the Profile to generate a higher expected contribution than the FAFSA EFC. (This is true at nearly all private colleges, not just Amherst.) They also, like most privates, include an expected contribution from student summer earnings – the FAFSA formula does not.

So, yes, Amherst meets 100% of need, but they determine need based on their own formula (once again, virtually all private colleges do this).

You can call and ask about how they determined your need and came up with that amount. You can even ask if they’d consider an adjustment based on some aspect of your family’s situation that you believe they may not have fully understood or based on some recent change of circumstance. But it will be their call, of course.

Once your get your other acceptances from other schools you’ll be able to compare your options and see what makes the most sense. It will also give you more of a basis upon which to approach them about a possible adjustment. If you find that all or most of their peer schools gave you a far better aid package, you can call and ask them why that might be the case and begin a dialogue with them. If you find it’s the best offer you get, or among the best, then of course you might be smart to just say, “Thanks a bunch! Can’t wait to come!”

And, by the way, congratulations on your acceptance!

Ah, thanks a lot for the advice! Yeah, I guess I’m just a bit anxious for everything to come together! :D
