"I decided not to submit a picture to the apps that required it because Im white and they might think im lying. Even though thats the stereotype, not every person in Mexico is dark skinned."

The reason for that is that you are most likely close to fully-European. People who think all Mexicans look alike are misinformed. There are over 300 ethnic groups in Mexico, notwithstanding the Central and South Americans who migrate through Mexico to reach the United States.

The fair question is, should white Hispanics who have not been mistreated by the United States, and may have even mistreated Native Americans in Mexico generations ago, get a boost by affirmative action?

It's a really complex question because there is no concrete determining factor for the different qualities of "Hispanic." A lot of people are mestizo, or mixed heritage from Spaniards and indigenous groups, and so the colors of their skin can vary greatly. I don't look that Hispanic because my mom is a blue-eyed blonde, but I did check both Caucasian and Hispanic boxes because I think that's fair. A lot of my friends who applied to non-Ivies checked Hispanic when they are maybe 1/2 or 1/2 SPANISH, which I do believe is taking advantage of the system. My dad is Mexican and he has been discriminated against because of it, as have my grandparents and the rest of my family that came here. If that weren't the case, I really wouldn't be OK with putting that I was Hispanic on any application regardless of the advantage it might give me.

Yes, it is a little on the stressful side. For anyone deferred from their SCEA or ED school who could not apply to any early action schools and choose not to apply to any rolling schools, it is hard not to know what two weeks will bring

11argon... Im really glad you brought that point to discussion. Mexico consists of a mix of cultutres that migrated a long long time ago. However, we all now share the same idiosyncrasy and traditions so theres a notable Mexican culture. While I am white, and in fact my great great grand father was german, I dont share any german culture and I cant say Im half german even thouht I can trace back german generations in my family. I can bet you that most of the Mexican last names come from Spain, but that doesnt make people half-spaniards.

Last summer I went to a Penn summer program and many people told me I didnt look like a mexican. I DO look as a mexican but not like the stereotypical mexican or like the mexican you tend to see in the movies. I do unerstand that misconcpetion though, since most of the mexicans in the US go as indocumentados and are the underpriviledged class that share indian roots. SO I never get offended, even though I DO look like a mexican, not the mexican the worlds know but neway ahha..

This is why I checked off hispanic, I have lived in Mexico for all my life.. and believe that there are certain customs and traditions Mexicans follow that are pretty notable, although some of them might be stereotypes.

So some of yall haven't heard from anywhere yet??
I applied 11 places and was supposed to hear back from only my safety before April (March 29, whatever) because it had rolling admissions. Somehow, I have already heard back from 3 schools that "don't/won't release" decisions until April, and then I've gotten 3 likely letters, so that knocks out 7 of my schools. I couldn't imagine not knowing about ANYWHERE.

Does anyone think that being nominated by their school for a prestigious scholarship to particular college and then not being named a semi finalist has any reflection on whether they will ba accepted to HYP ect?

j07...which schools have you heard from? As for me, I got accepted to my safety, and then I got an Early Write from Williams. I'm still waiting on the other five (including Princeton). I'm beginning to get nervous :|

bernardolw:
your situation is very interesting... very similar to mine actually!!
As of race, I'm 100% asian. But I've lived 15 years of my 17years-long life in South America. I've never been out of country except my immigration to the USA 3 years ago.
I checked both asian and hispanic... I wonder if berkeley will accept me for my hispanic culture or reject me for my asian traits? :D

LOL pikasof, that's hilarious. So I suppose Asians who have lived in America can check "Caucasian", and Caucasians who have lived in Africa can check "African"?

Hahahahaha.
Jon - I have been accepted to Plan II Honors at University of Texas, Duke, Vanderbilt, and USC. I got likelies from Dartmouth, UNC-Chapel Hill, and UVA. I was COMPLETELY surprised and shocked by every one of those acceptances except for UT. I was fairly convinced that I had spent ~$700 to be rejected ten times...but now I only have four impending rejections to deal with!

I know I'm so so so lucky. I really just think about it sometimes and wonder why I even got accepted to most of those places. It's kind of a blessing in disguise, though, because it's going to make my decision so much more difficult. I figured I would get into one or two of my 11 and then it wouldn't be that tough of a decision, but it's already really difficult and I haven't even heard from my top 3 choices yet.
