Finally....but the sad news is my D's waitlisted too.....

I can tell you, from the experience of D's friend, the student writing a letter where you put together a persuasive argument as to why she and Smith are a good match and explaining why Smith is her #1 choice.
You might want to look at the letter before it's sent out...some of the girls don't have the hang of showcasing themselves in a persuasive manner.

GREAT ADVICE !!! Thanks so much 'Dad'....she's working on a letter as I type! I also suggested contacting her alumna interviewer and asking for another push!.....

I suspect that they waitlisted more people this year because last year they got a larger number of accepted students actually enrolling that they expected. This caused a housing crunch at the beginning of the fall. If Smith is where you really want to go and you were waitlisted, TheDad's suggestion of a letter is a great idea.

thanks....we will do that...
Also, on the bannerweb.....her application listed major as 'undecided' and she had applied as 'engineering'.....is this one of those schools where you aren't allowed to declare a major as a freshman...or did they make a mistake? Could this have bearing on her waitlist status?

Here is a scenario which shows
that there are not any guarantees.

A recruited athlete with a high
academic profile (offers of merit
scholarships from other schools
ranging from $6K to $12.5K)... but
WAIT LISTED @ Smith.

Unusual..... or part of the recruiting
game?

D was waitlisted and will probably leave it as that..doesn't want to be anyones second choice.. . Good luck everybody...

parting note: Smith was a jeopardy category last night...two players lost money thinking Hillary Clinton went there.

All students are undecided until they officially declare their major. Normally done during the sophmore year but can be done as a first year. One of my d's friends declared fall semester of her first year. What you are interested in majoring in may have had a part in their admissions decision, but that is different that officially declaring a major.

This year may be one of those where waiting list candidates stand a better chance. The admissions office is likely to be more conservative in handing out "accepts" as a result of the overenrollment they experienced last year (probably many factors went into that, including all the publicity around the engineering school). So I wouldn't be surprised to find them making use of the waiting list this year.

(this is the XY mini, not to be confused with XX mini - unless you like)

...that sounds encouraging....we'll take that as good news on this dark day....;(

spj00,
D applied as an intended engineering major last yr...was offered a Picker Fellow. So, you can declare an intention.

I can back the Smith dads up on the reasonings for so many wait-lists this year. Keep pushing you guys! You'll just have to wait a little while.

Not just the engineering publicity... but the new science complex too which serves no meaning to me disgruntled
