Decisions

Thank you for your input. Also the classes I take, would they be the same ones the declared business majors are taking?

You could certainly sign up for those.

In the first year it is GenEds and low-level classes. You would just want to make sure that your math class (for example) is the one required for business majors.

I looked on the web site, in the freshman year business majors are required to take Math 127 (calculus), and a couple of intro econ classes. All of these also fulfill GenEd requirements.

You can see the requirements here:

I applied via early action for Computer Science, and just got my acceptance packet in the mail, thought it was a bit discouraging. I was accepted as an undeclared major.

Would anyone happen to know if Computer Science was an impacted major at UMass, or whether it’s competitive to get into or not? I’d like to have a good chance of getting into the major, otherwise I’ll choose one of my other options at WNEU, so any help would be appreciated.

Also, my deferral from the major may have been due to the fact that I haven’t taken calculus or pre calc, which computer science depends on as I heard. I’ll try speaking with an admissions counselor, and see if I could take those courses my freshman year.

And if anyone had the same experience as I’m having, or could help me out a bit, that’d be great. I’d love to hear any tips or my chances of getting into my major of choice for sophomore year. Thanks!

AFAIK, Comp Sci is a competitive major. Not sure what you mean by “impacted”.

I don’t think they limit enrollment for comp sci, like they do for nursing or some of the business school programs, so I think as long as you did well in your freshman year, and took the right classes, you would have no problem getting in.

@notrichenough thank you you were a great help!!!

Thanks notrichenough! Impacted majors are those that have more students apply than the school can accommodate. I’ll try meeting with the admissions counselor, and find my chances of getting in. I do feel it’s worth the extra effort, as their program for comp sci is ranked very highly. :)

My girlfriend got her decision in the mail today not online. She was deffered. Does anyone have any insight on deferrals from UMass? Is there any way to know how many deffered students are later accepted? Also I’m a sophomore at UMass so if anyone has any questions about the school or specifically CNS or education minors fire away!

We are still waiting. Getting discouraged.

Got deferred too.
2.9 uw and 3.1 w gpa and 1230/1600 SAT
Kind of expected to be deferred anyway but still disappointed

She has a 3.5 uw 3.6 w. 1020/1600 1570/2400 SAT. Just for reference.

Also cheer and lots of ECs.

Yikes, still waiting to hear. Doesn’t sound encouraging. 3.35 gpa 1750/2400 sat. great ec’s but…very discouraged.

Sindala - we are still waiting, too. Yes, very discouraging!

I just sent a PM to the UMass Amherst Admissions FB page. They wrote back that they couldn’t give me the details but that my son’s letter had gone out at the end of last week and that if we don’t hear by Friday to let them know.

Hoping for good news!

Well, was very excited to get a big Umass envelope, however my son was also accepted but as an undeclared major. Better than getting deferred or rejected but will have to figure out our next step from here.

So glad that your son finally received his big envelope. I was thinking the difficult part was the applications and the waiting but I think the decision is just as difficult.

Thanks MACLASSOF2013 -Yes, we are still up in the air! Was so excited to get the big envelope this morning. Was thinking now we are safe in case he either doesn’t get in to his 1st and 2nd choices (UConn and WPI) and/or we find we can’t afford them but we are still in limbo!

Reading over all the info that came in the packet and found this:

Providing Additional Informational after Admission
Students may choose to be reconsidered for admission to a selective major on the basis of additional academic information (SAT/ACT scores and senior grades) not available at the time of the original admissions decision. The request for reconsideration must be submitted in writing, along with the new academic information. Students will be notified of the university’s decision.

So I told my son to work really hard the next 10 days so that his 1st semester grades are as high as possible and we will resubmit and see what happens. Also, told him it would be a good idea to call his Admissions Rep and find out how close he was and what he can do to improve his chances to being admitted to engineering, etc.

I’m under the impression that being deferred from a competitive major in the EA round is preferable to being admitted as undeclared. From what admissions told me, although my daughter was deferred to RD for a nursing decision, she is still being considered for admission into that major. But, I definitely think the information is ambiguous at best. Does anyone have any opinion/insight?

Nursinghopeful - Well, I hope things work out for your daughter. i don’t know what to think. Hopefully we will know more after we talk to Admissions.

If it is the case that is better to be deferred to RD rather than be admitted EA Undeclared, why then would they even bother to admit someone EA Undeclared?

Now I am even more of a ConfusedMominMA!!

Confused - I am too confused! And I also hope it works out for your son. What type of engineering is he looking at?

What I understood from a very brief conversation with admissions was that admittance to undeclared meant that the first choice major was denied. However, the letter your son received suggesting he could send in supporting documents to warrant a second look certainly suggests that he still may be admitted. So, I really don’t know what the difference between deferred and admittance to undeclared is.

Keeping my fingers crossed for all!
