Yeah, the info about submitting more information is essentially what being deferred to RD means. They want to make their decision based on further SAT tests and senior grades. I don’t know!

The EA info on the website says they make decisions based on SAT tests thru Oct 31st. My son took the SATS on Dec 1st and got 200 pts higher. We did send those scores in and they certainly got them before making his decision (since it took them so long) but if they really only use scores thru Oct 31st then that could make a big difference. So I guess we will send in his 1st semester Senior grades and those Dec 1st SAT scores and see what happens.

I also sent an email to my son’s HS GC and told him the situation. Figured he might’ve dealt with similar situations in the past and might have some insights and/or suggestions.

Will let you know what I find out. Good luck to all our kids!

I know it’s a little late…but I figured I’d post anyways!
I just received my acceptance last Friday, so I know how frustrated all of you must feel!
I was accepted to my first choice major (linguistics) with an 8k a year scholarship and acceptance to the honors college. My spire status did not change until 2 days after I got the letter inthe mail.

Just for reference:

SAT: reading 670 math 590 writing 640
SAT II: German 660
ACT: combined: 29 (35 English 34 reading 27 science 21 math…yeah I know haha)
Unweighted gpa: 3.6
Weighted: 3.95

For nursing hopeful and ConfusedMom - accepted undeclared means you are accepted for admission and can enroll as a freshman in the university but will have to declare/be accepted to your major once you are on campus after taking some of your general ed classes. Depending on the major it can be fairly difficult to get accepted - particularly those like nursing, Isenberg or engineering. You have to do well in specific predictor classes so you should consider what you would do if you don’t get into your target major eventually

They will sometimes allow majors to be changed between admission and enrollment. My son was accepted to Poli Sci but changed to Econ before NSO. They review those requests on a case by case basis and I would expect that moving from undeclared to a specific major would be the same.

For deferred, you have not yet been accepted to the university but may still be accepted in the major you requested unless they specifically told you that was not an option.

ConfusedMominMA, I feel sure the Dec SAT scores would be considered, given what they said about new evidence making a difference. Send scores and write/call/email them. Everyone else that got in but not into your preferred major: can’t you just go to UMass and do well taking the courses you’d be expected to? Make a good showing in the actual courses, and you should be a shoo-in for something like engineering anyway. Nursing might be a little more specialized, but I’m sure a good record at UMass would overcome a lot of hesitation.

Confused Momin - take a look at the required courses and grades needed to transfer into Mech engineering if enrolled as undeclared. If your appeal doesn’t work but your son thinks they can meet the requirements then go for it. Given this list I would think that they will be looking at senior year mid-term grades on calculus, physics or chem - probably looking for APs. Of course any improvement on math SAT would help. Good luck

Admission to the Major:
To be admitted to the ME or IE major, a student must complete, with a grade of C or better, all of the seven technical courses in the freshman year: Math 131 and 132, Engin 110 or 111 or 112 or 113; CHEM-ENG 120 or CE-ENGIN 121 or E&C-ENG 122 or M&I-ENG 124; Chem 111; and Physics 151/153*. A cumulative grade point average of 2.0 is also required.

I don’t think engineering is that hard to get into if you have done well in the prerequisite classes. In fact it sounds like it is automatic. You should probably ask the school.

Assuming it is automatic (or close to it) there is no down-side to going in undeclared and then joining the major later.

Either:

1) he does well in the pre-reqs and gets in; or

2) he does really bad in the pre-reg, in which case if he was already in the major he would probably switch majors because it would be clear engineering was not for him.

What are his other options?

I don’t know what “Pr-Engin” means, I’ll see if I can ping DS when he is on-line, maybe he will know.

From surfing around the UMass web-site, it appears that “Pr-Engin” is something like pre-engineering or probationary engineering:

It gets you into the School of Engineering without having declared a specific major, so you have access to engineering advising, and can get into classes that are restricted to engineering majors.

“PR-ENGIN is Pre-engineering. It’s what you’re declared as before you’re officially an engineering major. You’ve gotta take some prereq courses (intro engineering courses, calc, physics) before you can declare the field. It’s one of those things they don’t tell you about.
But when you join into the engineering major you aren’t an engineering major at first.”

Notrichenough- you make a good point. Well, we’ll see what happens when we send in more info and with the rest of his applications.

And thanks for the info on Pr-Engin. That’s interesting that even when you are admitted into Engineering you really aren’t an engineering major yet!

Hi! Congrats to everyone who has gotten in so far! So, I applied regular decision about 20 days ago and I have still not received my spire account. How soon did you guys get one? Also, has everyone who applied EA gotten their decisions back? I’m just wondering if they’ve moved to RD’s yet. Thanks!

Hi emmacat1234 - my son applied RD around the 20th of December. It says that his materials were processed on December 25. He received his Spire account January 10. It sounds like you should be getting yours any time.

His application shows that it’s complete and is under review - no decision yet!

Emmacat - I think I read that they wanted to done with EA decisions by last Fri, the 18th. So hopefully they are now starting to work on the RD decisions.

Thanks BTMell! I was worried something went wrong with my application. Good luck to your son, I hope he gets in! I read somewhere on their site that they’re not releasing RD’s decisions until early March, though. I really hope that’s not true, because I don’t want to wait!!! Hopefully, they start releasing in February.

My DS talked to UMass Admissions today about his situation (he was accepted Undeclared rather than directly into Engineering). She said that they had not used his Dec 1st SAT scores (1980) in his decision but that his previous scores (1780) were high enough. The problem is his GPA (9-11th grade 3.3). The 1st semester is over on Mon and she said to have his GC sent her an email directly with his 1st semester grades after they are calculated. Also she asked that my DS call her in a week or so to check in and see where things stand. Keeping fingers crossed that he does well on his finals tomorrow and Friday.

I hope your son does well! My son applied ED so was then late applying elsewhere because he was deferred. My son’s taking midterms this week too so it’s a little intense up here.

Well, my DSs grades for the 1st semester came out today. He ended up with a 90.375 for the semester so calculated into his present GPA, I think he ends up with a 3.36. I reminded his GC to email the grades to the Rep at UMass but I’m thinking that his grades won’t be high enough to get him out of Undeclared limbo and into Engineering. We shall see. Fingers crossed!
